Question about glow plug replacement

I tested the glow plugs on my 110 TD5 today
One is dead short, one is 262 Ohms, the other two are open circuit.

So l've ordered a set.
l've read horror stories about them breaking off in the head.

My question is, if they are tight, how much force can l put on when removing them before l need to stop? As in, at what point should l give up before it breaks.

When l changed the glow plugs on my Transit TDCi (similar horror stories about them breaking off on the head) they were not that tight and once cracked off just unscrewed with no issues at all.
 
Yes some do get stuck but it is not very often you get a horror story. It will be just like your Transit easy.
Clean the glow plug sockets to ensure no crud gets into the engine. Give yourself the best chance change them whilst the engine is hot. I can't give you a torque wrench setting as when to stop tugging but it's a small thread about M8 I think so no breaker bars.
 
The torque for an M8 bolt is circa 50 to 55NM (between fifty and fiftyfive) - not a lot so they shouldn't be that tight. Good advice from @Tim4x4 heat up the engine first, not just a quick warm up, get the temp gauge up to the middle (normal) ....

Okay, will do. Was that 5Nm torque on the glow plugs?
Just remember the glow plug is not a solid high tensile bolt it is a tube with a thread near the top. If and it's a big IF, they do get stuck in the socket it is most likely to be the plain portion after the thread which holds it.
Getting the engine hot will give you the best chance of not having any issues. You just need to go easy when releasing them don't tug wildly with the wrench gently apply pressure increasing untill it is free. You will have no issues for sure.

Did mine last year or year before, before winter set in as the Puma was hard work to start once the cold set in! I too was dreading the take off of the old Glow Plugs and did loads of web searches, one top tip that I did was for 2/3 days before I attempted job, sprayed wd40 around glow plug socket and drove as normal. They all came out really easy, without any real effort, not too sure if the WD40 helped, but will do it again if I need to sort glow plugs. Good Luck.

As @Tim4x4 said, its the section under the threaded section that is likely to cause any resistance. WD40 or any other/similar penetrating oil will probably not reach this section past the fine thread but may help getting that part undone.
There is a special 'ceramic' grease for glow plugs, don't be tempted to use a copper based or std grease on assembly/reffiting - if you don't have any ceramic, best use nothing ...
 
Agreed, I literally just did mine by hand and then a slight nip up with the wrench. I would say more like max 20nm tbh

I would say less than that, most m8 engine bolts seem to be around the 30nm mark, so glow plug has to be less?

According to info on the 2007 - On Workshop Manual the Nm for Glow Plugs on a 2.4tdci is 10Nm. Page attached. I know yours is a TD5, but shows they don't need 50Nm!

Not yet! I ordered the glow plugs off Ebay and didn't look at where the seller was....Poland

They should have been here last week but no sign of them, so l've opened a DNR case, and have to wait for the seller to do something about it.

I have been clicking on the location tab and selecting UK only, same tat but at least its already over here!
