putting my mark on on hybrid series 2a

whenever I see something like this I always think back to that bloke in the modded 110 with mismatched brake calipers and various over issues, that came off the road and killed his children and all the **** that went with it, I cannot remember if he went to prison or not?
The point being, its all fine and rosey until something serious happens, and if they investigated down as far as the brake calipers on the 110, just imagine what they would/could do with a car thats not what it claims to be
Add in the sue the arse off eveybody culture we are in, and you are a hrave/ foolhardy man to ignore the possible consequences
Imagine it now with this plastered here and most likely elsewhere, have an accident and all the evidence they can dream of is right there in front of them!



again like i said on the thread, i have had it checked over by a reputable land rover specialist before i even drove it... i don't understand why everyone seams to be against this and not read what i have said in this thread....point is i like the classic look of the series 2a, i also like coil springs and disc brakes, i also like the 200TDI and defender 5 speed box, i also like nice seats, and above all i like a project...so when i got the chance to get this it ticked all the boxes, and this is my 3rd landy a 90 and a 110 before. i also like the look of classic triumph motorcycles, but again i like disc brakes and better engines that don't shake your bones off, so i bought a 2013 triumph Bonneville T100 5 years ago...and i still love riding it...

I dont think anyone is against it, what we/they are suggesting is be careful.

Having it checked if fine and dandy for mech/safety issues, but might not carry any weight in the eyes of the law, like I said earlier on check the dvla points system.

It sounds to me like you know exactly what you have.
 
thought i would update on a bit of work done, rebuilt the tailgate , put bench seats in to match the front seats, and put rubber matting down, ( not finished the matting yet ? )
 
Well I like it. Even if the wheels and tyres are a little offensive.

shame to see an old girl done up like a ten dollar ho but it’s yours and your free to do whatever flicks your bean.
My series is more than a bitsa but I’ve tried to keep the customisation in the cab so it’s a bit comfier to drive.
Look forward to seeing it progress.
 
Asking for a friend; how do you keep the original reg on a car that doesn’t comply or is the Q plate to be added when it’s on the road?
 
Wow.. seeing you get such a 'warm' reception to your project made me actually make an account just so i could make this post and tell you that i think that's an awesome machine you've got! Couldn't be any further from original but so what?! You always want to be careful with these things but as you said, you took it to a specialists and they were happy enough to allow you to drive it down the road, get it MOT'd every year and you're really doing enough to keep yourself safe as far as I'm concerned. You took it to a garage which is more than you can say for half the death trap series kicking about now they're MOT exempt. You've obviously got your head screwed on so I'm sure you'll ensure it's a safe machine.

I am planning on doing a similar project (although more sympathetic to the original design) with my series 2. It came into my ownership with a series 3 dash, and wings, dents in every panel and a rotten chassis. I plan on rebuilding with a 2.3 Mercedes petrol engine, LT77g/box and LT230 t/box. Will also have disco axles all round with disc brakes, but I am keeping the leaf springs may even fit electric power steering too while I'm at it! Was gonna post it on here but judging from the awful reception you got, I'll keep my posting on the forum limited!

Anyway, keep the photo's coming! I for one am enjoying them :)

thankyou dilybi..i hope you show how your getting on with your project (even if its private message) because i'm interested...
i've fitted side steps and rear step (so my mrs can get in without a bottle crate), and painted the rear interior, but haven't taken pics yet..

I’m of an age that we used to off road series 1’s cut and shunt old Range Rover chassis fit v8 lumps just because we wanted to. I’ve still got a series 1 on such a chassis with the mods registered in the late 80’s so no problem with Q plate. Recently fitted a td5 engine. My problem is that there is a hard core of rivet counters/scare mongers that will make you feel as welcome as a far* in a spacesuit. Fortunately there is also a hard core of guys with engineering background that appreciate these hybrid vehicles. Good luck with the truck.

Not really no. The current law was introduced to stop “ringers” where people where welding 2 crashed unibody cars together (usually badly) and passing off as a single vehicle. It was never intended to stop genuine builds and modifications.

Loads and loads of kit cars for example are legally registered and used keeping the donor cars ID. Despite the finished vehicle being substantially different.

And let’s not forget that vehicles modified in this way probably account for something like 0.001% of all the cars in the U.K. and most of them will never be used for regular commuting at peak periods. Meaning their risk profile is almost 0.0

Basically they cause no harm to anyone, man nor beast. If you want to get head up about something, there are far more worthwhile things to expel you energy on!

And to add. You’d be well advised to actually read the guidance on the .gov site. And NOTE it is guidance and not a definitive technical spec.

You should also note that the entire procedure is a self declaration one. This is a very key part!!!!

Most modified Land Rovers are likely to be within the guidance. But as it is a self declaration it is down to the owner. Not a passer by or wannabe vigilante.
