Hi, I’m looking to buy a freelander 1 3 door and I have found one I really like and looks to be in near perfect condition. It’s had 1 previous owner and full service history, it also has a 3 month warranty that can be extended to 36 months. Only problem is it has 108,000 miles. Should I go for it still?

Depends on the price, which engine? Who did the servicing and has the gearbox oil been changed?

Price - £2495
2006
2.0L Diesel
Manual
I don’t know if the servicing is from LR as it only says full service history. It passed its MOT on 5th of May 2021. It has just had a full service. I don’t know if it has had the gearbox oil changed but I can find out.

As you talk about warranties, I presume a dealer is selling it. Therefore the service its been given and even the MOT and service history are probably not worth relying on at all!

Would need to be in very good condition to warrant that price. If it is, I recon good condition F1's are great value for money.

As said, 108k is low mileage, but you can't get over the fact its a 15 year old car.

Generally Freelanders are very good on reliability, mine's over 20 years old (with the earlier Rover diesel engine) and is boringly reliable.

What I would say is that on 108k it will probably be needing a clutch shortly if it hasn't had 1 yet - not cheap. Also check to make sure you are perfectly happy with the operation of the clutch because if the hydraulics are going, then its a box off job and you may as well replace the clutch. Check it still has its prop shaft installed and check the 4 tyres are the same make and model. When buying an F1, always budget on needing a recon VCU (about £300).

FYI....

Warranties (here at least) are generally just insurance policies that dealers take out on the car - so you could arrange that yourself. Mind you I'm not sure if the insurance companies like selling them on 15 year old cars.

Thank you very much

Have you looked at its mot history on the government website. The fuel tank cradle rust away easily and all the belts should have been changed. My FL1 had less than 70k and needed new belts cos of its age.

You could get a Freelander 2 for that sort of money as above it would need to be in A1 condition for that kind of outlay in my opinion.

Had a look at freelander 2 but I would find it hard to find something for around 2495 and if I did the condition probably wouldn’t be great. I also like the freelancer 1s uniqueness as they haven’t made a 3 door or any others like it

I spose having a 3 door means there is 2 less windows to go wrong but when I had mine, the family were always complaining about the lack of rear doors.

I paid £2k for my 58 plate FL2 TD4 SE, which was in great condition, except for the fact it had been maintained by a moron, who had damage the engine by dropping a nut into a cylinder.
I've put another grand on it in repairs, but now I have a nice condition, rust and damage free FL2 for about £3k on the road.

I think almost £2500 for a FL1 is on the high side, and would need to be absolutely immaculate, with full history and not a spec of rust anywhere, or the price can't be justified, especially as that's into bottom FL2 money.

Just seen a brilliant eggsample on autotrader
