Pump Timing

Can I check the timing on my disco (300Tdi with a Bosch pump) by setting to TDC on no.1 cylinder, and then adjusting the injection pump pulley through the inspection cover on the timing case? How does slackening the 3 pulley bolts release the pulley from the pump shaft? I presume that I may also have to lock the pump before I do the above.

Thanks for the reply, great vid. Checked the timing this morning, all spot on. Still got the problem though, white/blue smoke that starts at about 1800 rpm, but clears after 2200 rpm. This is accompanied by a misfire. Timing belt has just been changed, but the timing is spot on. Any ideas guys?

turbo comes in about 1800 so that may be a clue
 
I did consider it, but wouldn't it smoke all the way through the revs after 1800? My smoke goes after 2200. Checked for play in the turbo spindle, there's about 1mm.
 
No, I haven't had the time to take it all apart. I had a guy who knows his stuff change the cam belt, and he's adamant that the cam timing is ok. If the cam timing was out, would I have trouble starting? She fires up first turn, and there doesn't seem to be any drop off in performance.

What I was thinking was that it could be the thingy that gives it more fuel when the boost comes in. it cold be that it is overfueled at low revs and then ok when the boost comes in..

Ahhh right good thinking, hadn't thought of that! Is that the wastegate does then?
 
Just to follow up guys, it was the pump timing. I advanced the timing by a few degrees, and jobs a goodun. Thanks for the help, its appreciated!
