an extra shaft coming off the transfer case or transmission to run some
accessory. It stick out the back of farm tractors to power the equipment
pulled behind the tractor be it a hay baler or corn picker. The old dump
truck my father has on the farm has a chain drive off the PTO/PTU
(whichever abbrev. you prefer) to run the pump to dump the bed. 4x4 you
could run a pump for a winch.

Most commonly, it's an extra output shaft that can be used by external
equipment. Tractors may have it off the transmission/rear end but in
the 4x4 world it's usually an extra output from the transfer case. I
had one on an old Scout that ran a winch and a pass thru shaft in the
winch housing on the front bumper that the Dept. of Natural Resources
used to run every thing from saws to chippers.
