Just watched a Utube video on fitting some aftermarket propshafts to a heavily modded Defender. The point made was that the slider of each propshaft should be to the front of the car. So on a P38 the rear propshaft slider would be close to the transfer gearbox flange and at the front the propshaft slider would be close to the front diff end? The front propshaft on mine has the slider close to the trans box ie rear?
Any one know how it should be on a P38?

Prop sliders on the P38 go towards the transfer box front and rear. Same on Defender. They may have been fitting Disco II front prop to it, in that case slider goes to front diff. Put the video link up lets have a look at what they were doing.

Shaft they removed was a Disco II prop. Same as the one to the left on the floor. That type MUST be fitted with slider to diff because of double spicer at transfer box end. The one they fitted and the standard one should be fitted with slider to transfer box. Keeps the slider out of the ****e.

Thanks wammers and all for the input, if the weather holds tomorrow will swop over my spare propshafts (good u/js and from doner cars over the years) for the existing which have been on forever! be interesting to see condition - can only really see condition with them off, suspect they need changing..

Thanks again.

You need quite a narrow socket on the nuts. My 3/8" set can just jam in there if I turn the prop to get at each nut. I've got a vague memory they might be 9/16" rather than a metric size.

Thanks chaps, I do have the 9/16 propshaft tool as I have changed or replaced u/js in the past. Update the weather was not perfect but managed to remove both propshafts. I was expecting the rear to be worn but it had no play but the front propshaft had a v small amount of play at the gearbox end. This surprised me as I put in this brand new (at the time) front propshaft only four years ago!! can't remember the outfit I got it from. I have always maintained them on a regular basis, just shows? Lets hope she is smoother now? I am also replacing the middle and rear boxes of the exhaust and with the old ones removed it was a lot easier to work on the props. Next job put on new exhaust boxes. Oil Change, New plugs and filters etc and etc.

ps thanks for the Padocks UTube, very good.
