Propshaft questions

I bought two new shafts in the end, both branded Bailey Morris. Compared to the old ones, the U-Joints seem very stiff. Is this usual? I have never handled a new one before.

I think they should hold their own weight and not flop if that makes sense. Dont forget to grease uj and sliding joint.

I haven't fitted them yet. The vehicle is currently a rolling chassis with the engine not yet mounted properly.

I got the shafts from Paddock Spares. they were £57 each (Inc. VAT).

I see, they sound like they are good quality anyway, I will try and split my front propshaft and adjust it before I bite the bullit and buy a new one

I see on LRTV that with the front prop the joints should be off set ends to each other, as if one end is rotated a quarter turn, I am not very good at explaining but my front prop ends are neither equal nor opposite, mine seem to be an eighth of a turn.

Could this be the cause of the vibration between 50/65mph?

If you clean the shaft in the area of the sliding joint there should be two allignment marks which when correct are opposite each other.Usually on the wider sections of tube.

iirc it's a bit like 30 degrees out of phase.

i believe this is due to the front prop not being a straight line to the diff.

it's like that to reduce vibrations

series are generally in phase

What grease would the forum recommend for the prop shaft? It is the same with the oil in that most which are recommended in the green book are now discontinued.

On another forum I found "whatever you have in the grease gun when it needs doing". Is that really sufficient?

U/Js and sliders have a pretty harsh life. Whatever you squeeze in there wont last long so not much point in getting technical, just do it regularly.

So is the way to do this pull them out to full extension, pump in grease and clean up any that comes out when they are fitted?

Sliding joint only needs 2 pumps. Fill uj until grease come out back of cup seals.

These are new prop shafts which are not on the vehicle yet, so they are not yet filled with grease.
