Propshaft Backlash

ok seems to be working, the main ball joint took 10 tons of pressure to remove it , glad i didn't try this on my drive way.

the knocking noise is now gone, thanks to all who helped me solve this problem.

I have a 2001 TD5 110 crew cab...

And my prob shaft has back lash too!! I have already replaced the A frame ball joint although my original one was good too and all four U joints but the back lash is still there.

All rear bushes were replaced 40K ago and are in good shape, my car has done 95000 kms now and I am a pretty frequent off roader as well.

I took out the rear wheels hubs to replace bearing seals and re grease the bearings and found out that my rear half shafts and flanges have very minor free ply; when I pulled out the shafts I was surprised by what I saw..

The shaft splines at the differential ends were twisted on both sides...

Is this the reason of the backlash? I couldn't find new shafts so I re fitted the old ones for now. Will the backlash go when I install new shafts and flanges? Or do I need new Diffs and transfer box?

Yes, there should be no free play in the half-shaft splines or drive flanges!
Up to 1/4 of a turn of the propshaft due to backlash in the diff itself seems OK.

Would any one know how much do the half shafts cost? Mine is a 2001 TD5, 110 crew cab and it has a big square like rear diff, I would really appreciate if some one can give me part numbers for the half shafts.

Rear prop shaft of my defender turns alot less than 1/4 but the front one is probably turning a quarter.

Is any thing wrong there?

no

FTC1724 and FTC1725 are the part numbers for the rear half-shafts.
FTC859 is the drive member.

Hi all,

I am fighting the same battle here.
I replaced both drivemembers and half-shafts. That took care of 50% of the "clunk". I took away the rear propshaft and did a surprisingly smooth test drive without it . So I think the remainder of the slack is in the back as well. Will put in new uj's and see what happens. If I am still not happy I'll have the A-frame ball joint replaced. After that, I'll start to worry a bit more.
I can turn the rear propshaft about 1 centimeter but from what I read here this is within limits.

Yeah you are right!! but thats what these forums are for?? Arn't they? Help each other!!!!

Its a new term I came across so I asked what it means my guess is that its an another name for a drive flange that goes onto the hub. But thats just a guess!

I am in a country where such vehicles are scarce... and mechanics have made up names of different parts in the local language!
