Hi all,
I'm very new to this zone so i hope i posting in the right place. I joined up because I've a little project that i was looking into. Basically i bought a 1977 series 3 with a 1968 series 2a tax book. it is truly and utterly rogered and needs ground up restoration. I also have 2 range rover classic axles from early enough seventies. The chassis is rotten to a degree and i'm thinking it will be more cost effective to replace it with a galvanized one. I know a lad who is able to source me a very good 200tdi with an r380 gearbox that will need the bellhousing and input shaft changed to fit. what i'm trying to find out, is it a viable option to get a defender replica chassis reworked to 88 inches and try and source defender axles, steering box, a frames etc and fit them all and try and work the series 3 bodywork to it, or would there be a way of using the range rover axels.
All advice is welcome as i'm a novice when it comes to landy

What you trying to do? Build a ringer. When you say tax book do you mean the log book, think your on very thin ice if your going to be using the 68 log book for a bits a rebuild

Here in ireland, it's easier to swap registration between vintage vehicles, "i didn't tell you that though". I have the registration swaped and corresponding plates fitted. The vehicle is quiet buggered. Note, i only payed 150 euro for it, cheap as chips. I was going to do it up to original condition but everyone i know who is into landrovers said i'd have a far superior vehicle if i did a bit of a hybrid job on it, i.e 90 running gear an r380 gearbox and a 200tdi engine plus vintage tax.

It also might be just better to scrap it and buy a defender and pay the extra tax, just wanted some views on it

or i could try and do it up to original condition and and get a defender later on when i can afford it, i just wanted something for towing cattle and horses and general farming

you could get an 88 inch coil chassis from designachassis and use that as your base if the rules are different in Ireland

Land Rover Chassis - 88" Coil Chassis Options and Pricing

or get the running gear and box and tdi bits and build up on a 90 chassis if that is allowed

How could i work the bodywork to the 90 chassis, would i need to reconfigure the tub and roof or would i get away with defender wings and front, sounds a bit messy.
