I'm toying with putting in an exchange box to be sure. Gear select was very loose and not easy from 2nd to 3rd. some metal evident in the oil also. Know any reliable refurb suppliers or anyone selling a working 2A box ?

Unless you're wanting to stay original then maybe a reconditioned series 3 box would be better for the full synchro experience ;)
 
I don't see it much of an inconvenience, it just adds to the experience of driving a 2A! It's not a speed machine by any stretch! But that's just me
I learned to live with non synchro on the farm, adds to charm you say? Well i guess it does from certain perspectives but i wouldn't have non synchro ever again, in fact, having a clutch full stop is on the list of things i want to get rid of ;)
 
Thanks for the feedback / advice. As a replacement / rebuild is another big cost I'll see how it drives on the road for a while and save up the pennies in readiness.
 
Had all the cappings re-galvanised. Came back lovely and shiny. Now a lot of riveting to do :)

Started to install wiring harness (AutoSparks), but found a number of connections badly made off. Now checking each connection and re-making or soldering the connection. Annoying considering the cost...

But it is the main reason why I make all my own looms, the cable is cheap enough and it's also quite fun when you know what you're doing and it enables you to upgrade the connections and plugs to the likes of econoseal and superseal for high moisture and underbody applications.

Loving the new bright work, really sets it off when you rivet them on.

Had a good day finishing the front wiring and installing the bumper and grille
Plenty of P-clips used to hold the harness in place.
My good lady helped with the harness repairs, a 2nd pair of hands always welcome - and she brought lunch too. :)

Another successful weekend, this time Dad came to help fit the cappings. Lots of redundant holes from previous owners; will tidy up when final fittings are installed.
Very therapeutic and rewarding to see the transformation it makes.
Next jobs will be all the seals and final assembly of doors, sides and roof...

Found a number of holes in the tub which didn’t need to be there so went looking for acceptable solutions instead of ugly blanking plugs / bolts.

The rear badge location had 4 holes instead of 2 so found this badge instead of the the standard oval.

With all the cappings installed next job to fit new door seals throughout. So many rivets ...

Dashboard refurbished. New glass and bezels for the dials. Some new switches and all new tags.

Need to source the power outlet sockets - disproportionately expensive for what they are and won’t be used. Are there cheaper good looking alternatives ?

A few hours spent buzzing out the wiring harness and checking against wiring diagrams was time well spent to label each terminal and simplify the final installation onto the dash components.

With the help of my good lady we connected the battery and tested each circuit. All was good. Lights did what they were supposed to do.

Started the engine to test charge from dynamo. Warning light stayed on ! No output.
The dynamo was 2nd hand and “working” but as I hadn’t checked it I thought it may be the culprit. A simple job to remove it and checked internals. Replaced brushes as it was stripped. No issues found so not the likely cause.
Checked the voltage regulator and noticed one of the output contacts seemed irregular. A light clean with sandpaper solved the problem.
Dynamo output as it should be. Happy.
 
Final job in the wiring is to fit new instrument voltage regulator and test the fuel and temp gauge.
Wiring harness had the 2 leads for the engine - 1 for the cold start switch as 1 for the temp sender. Couldn’t find it. After some google and forum searches realise that the engine doesn’t have a temp sender unit installed so will need to drain down and remove the plug and fit new sender unit.
Every job is a learning opportunity.
I’ll check the new sender unit and gauge out of the engine before the drain down to be sure it all works.

My only concern is that those wings are almost too pretty to put a cup of coffee on! You’ll have to make some colour coded coasters:D

Thanks for the positive feedback, it's been a fun project for sure. Took it for a drive around a farm and got it all mucky underneath, much better :)
Looking forward to getting it on the road finally. Now considering next project.... Another landrover or a VW T2 camper !

You could always enjoy driving your little series for a year or three before the next one ;)
 
After a bit of hassle with getting the doors to close, things have come together finally.

Roof will be painted in situ as it was too vulnerable to paint and store off the chassis.

Dashboard nearly finished, all instruments work, speedo and choke cables connected.
Ordered a new heater with non-leaking matrix. Should arrive next week to complete the bulkhead.
New seat belts installed
