That aligns with my thouhgts, thanks for the info nathan5346 :)

I have a non-flashable ECU, and am happy I can replace the chip without too much grief, but would need some maps to play with!

Would be able to program the chip on the bench, but would want to know whether I could do it via the ECU as having to keep removing the chip would limit experimentation ;-)

Nanocom can remap, Whats invloved with replacing the non flash chip with a flashable chip? cost/labour wise ect

I suspect there's a bit more to it than just that.

The new chip will need to be programmed otherwise the Ecu would be just dead.

Whether you can just program it with the contents of the old chip I don't know myself...

Generally map flashing tools are different to diagnostic tools

David I know you can do the fitting with ur soldiering work

Hi Jay,

Yeah, probably could do it from a technical perspective.

But I'm still not entirely sure what these guys are providing, as it doesn't look like it will do what I wanted!

They say:

The chip fitted at factory in the MSB type ecu is a ROM (EPROM) being READ ONLY MEMORY, the coding inside it cannot be adjusted once it has been wrote, it is also known as (OTP) One Time Program, meaning once it has been programmed, it cannot be erased or re-programmed. The chip we supply is an identical replacement to this chip, we buy them in as Blank chips, and custom program them

(excusing their grammar 'once it has been wrote'...)

So, you just get a new EPROM with a different map in, with no option to reprogram it again, without opening the ECU, removing the chip, and replacing another.

So their solution won't allow you to upload new maps once the mod is done.

I might ask Gary at TD5alive whether his solution can be readjusted without opening the ECU and replacing the chip, or not.

No, these ECU's won't become reprogrammable via OBD even after chip replacement,

See, I'm quite happy soldering the chips, but the issue would be getting hold of mapped chips. I suspect the map-companies wouldn't be keen on selling me programmed chips, as if you wanted there's nothing to stop you reading the map off them, and programming up new chips...!
