Hi Some advice if possible

I have a 98 4.0se

On Sunday just gone I had a low vibration whilst in drive between initially 30-50mph

I used Monday, but Tuesday this has become a serious fault

The vibration from 10mph+ is severe mainly on acceleration an though not undriveable feels like it is shaking itself apart. Thankfully its not far from work to home and I made it back!

It only makes this vibration in either Drive or 1,2,3 and sport makes no difference. Reverse it doesn't make the noise or vibrate.

If I turn hard right there is usually a banging sound on 2 occasions it seems to make the engine very hot though the thermostat though slightly elevated is not showing over heating.

To be honest it sounds as if something is dragging somewhere, or catching though initial visual inspection shows no sign of anything broken or come apart.

I have read about U Joint and CV joint and also prop shaft but due to it very rapidly deteriorating am not sure. I am good with cosmetics and can do very basics. i do however have decent honest mechanic :)

the v8 otherwise is very sweet and 97k on the clock its fine on start up just when driving in gear and when moving. Braking seems to make it stop or reduce significantly

Any advice is appreciated

I know you mentioned that your not thinking its the props or UJs but id strongly suggest you have them checked anyway. There have been a few threads lately where folks have had a prop let go and it makes a hell of a mess... Just my 2p worth.

Cheers i will

I thought it was the prop intially but cant find anyone who has had similiar issue. I did 200 mile round trip Sunday and pretty much from the off but was fine not really a massive issue. A couple of weeks ago I topped up the transmission fluid and have checked every thing else and it has all seemed fine.
Another symptom was there was a clunk on gear change when I got home which its never done before :bored:

When you topped up the transmission how much did it need? You did check the level with engine running after running through from P to 1 and back to P while its all still cold?

According to the dip it was completely empty so I topped up 1ltr

I ran the engine for 5 mins before getting a reading that would make sense as I had the vibration a day before I did the transmission oil so did a check as something wasnt right but didnt do anything with the gear changes after ? Is this recommended

There's a how to or instructions somewhere, but you have to run through all the gears, pausing in each and take the reading with the engine still running. If you take a reading with the engine off, it can be way out...

Thanks will check tomorrow on my holidays this week

With gearbox oil cold. Start engine, move gear selector through all gears and place in park. Dip gearbox. With engine still running top up until oil level is between low and high marks.

when cold the level was at the max on the dip

when warm the dip was above the max point by approx 1-2 inches the fluid was clear and pink which is a good sign I think.

Same symptoms worse when warm did go through the gears though

Suggestions would now be appreciated

You have been under this and checked the propshafts i assume? Very unusual for a gearbox to cause vibrations and still function.

No beyond a visual check my knowledge is fairly limited mechanics I am more of a cosmetic man I am ace at getting the deals but crap at the mechanics work. I have an excellent mechanic locally in Blakeney who I take my car too when its beyond my ken

everything is connected and seems to be intact I can not see any thing hanging or loose at the moment. I was lucky last week as next week I am on my hols but picked up a C Class for a couple of hundred so at least have wheels

But i hate not having my range rover they are just so much better round here even on the single tracks

They may not be hanging loose (YET) but maybe shortly in a spectacular fashion if you don't check them for wear. Your problem sounds like a U/J on it's way home to me rather than anything to do with the gearbox.

just replace your prop ujs i did my front prop recently and will be doing the rear prop tomorrow. i couldnt detect any wear but did have vibration felt sitting in the front seats thats now gone and can detect a vibration at the rear hence doing my rear ujs tomorrow.
now the transmission whine i get still illudes me lol

Looks like the U Joint has gone seems smashed on the lower end am gonna find a pair of UJ and have a go myself as there are lots of info available just need to get back from my Hols
