problems when reversing

im getting a grinding noise and some resistance when reversing my 90. Any suggestions ! dont reckon its clutch or gearbox because allswell when moving forward.

it sounds like the rear nearside hub or maybe rear diff. its a Lreg 90 hardtop.

funny enough, mine is doing the same.

it doesnt happen all the time, and only started doing it after salisbury plain trip, but when reversing it feels like the handbrake is on, i have to rev it up to make it move...
havent looked at the hand brake yet...as my rear diff is making a funny noise when i lift off the accellerator, so it might be that...

so im interested in what replies you get

if its the handbrake binding that would make sense as the vehicle was sorned for 3 months. i did however release the handbrake when i put it away to his wee bed!

ill strip down the handbrake drum tommorow and have a nosy. it sound more of a toothy grinding noise which makes me worried its the diff !

could still be stuck on

put it in low box and reverse it will be easier at low speed to detect the resistance

when my hb stuck on i had to persuade the drum with a hammer to release it cos the landy would not move

If you have rear drums it could be the shoes lifting in reverse. Had it often on a Fiat years ago. Could be crud, shoes out of adjustment or even shoes in wrong way ie leading edge trailing.

What gearbox you got?

Apperantly if you reverse for an extended amount of time with an LT77 box,
it will starve the top rear gearbox bearing of oil and then from there on when in reverse you are putting load on the damaged bearing and get grinding noises, and this doesn't happen in forward gears.

I haven't personally seen this but i was warned about it after i bought my 110.

it would still get splash lube ,but reverse idler is prone to wear

problem solved the shoes adjuster had snapped off from the backplate on the transmission brake thus creating the orrible noise. sorted rodders
