Hi

I am new to this site but discovered it when looking for help. I have a 99 freelander 1.8 petrol. For a while now when I drive it I loose all power although the engine still ticks over. If I stop and wait a few minutes I can restart but again after a few minutes I loose all power until in the end the car cuts out completely and when it does restart I can only do about 10mph. Was told it could be fuel pump or filter. Any ideas as I am getting desperate.

I would change the filter, no harm in doing so anway, if that sorts it then there you go, if not then I would start checking the fuel system in sections.

Could be an air problem too I'm guessing. Check the air filter box to see if there are any obstructions.

As Mark says check ya air filter as this overlooked a lot [clogged filter] unlikely but it can happen, but the money is [a] fuel filter lift fuel pump [ c] high pressure pump or injector system [d] least likely ingnition, best of luck. . .:)

Thanks for the help, I will start with the fuel filter at the weekend and let you know how it goes.

Hi, I had exactly the same problem, I removed the fuel pump assembly to find that the nylon gauze pre-filter located in the base of the pump housing was completely blocked. Touch wood the car seems fine now.

It is going in this week to be looked at so hopefully when the filter is changed it should work. I have been told that there are two fuel filters that need changing in a 1.8 k series and one is in tank. I thought that there was only the one fuel filter that is the in tank filter is this correct in which case am I being taken for a ride?

unless you have an added in line fuel filter as an add on the only factory fit one is in the tank (part of the sender unit assembly).

Hi madmel76,

Here for you, hope they are ok.

Changed filter and put sender unit back only the car wouldnt start at all. Everything was as it should be so I couldn't understand what went wrong. I removed the sender unit again to double check everything was ok. I checked a diagram of the sender unit and there were two 'o' rings that weren't in my unit. I put two 'o' rings were the diagram showed and hey presto it started. Drove it for an hour and all went well. Next step is to go through the manual and attempt to service it myself!!!!!!
