I just switched out the old clutch master cylinder and started to bleed the new master cylinder. My problem is, is that the pedal is always retracting back down and will not come back up by itself.

I bleed it by first loosening the connection then pushing the pedal down (air bubbled out) and tightening while having to pull it back up.

Any thoughts on what could be going on??

Thanks

you have to bleed master first by loosening pipe connection on cylinder making sure its locked off before returning pedal, then slave check rod adjustment isnt too far near one end

I was bleeding the master and it looks like good fluid with no air is coming through. So it may be an adjustment issue on the master clyinder rod, because the old one had it down to one end, so I just did the same as the old one. Should I move it down further along the adjustment rod then??

Update: Pushed the adjustment screws further back and it now stays up but will not come back up by itself. I went down and bled the slave valve and first 2 times there was a little air which came out, did it three more times after that and just fluid came out. Still no luck on the pedal. The pedal doesn't feel like it is engaging anything.... Any advice??

I did not change the slave, as recommended by the guys at liveridge who I got the defender from. I'm going to give them a call again come morning. Did get a spare slave though, is it worth switching that out too??

When pumping the clutch pedal there is nothing blowing back into the Master clutch reservoir, is that what you mean by that??

thanks for the advice James martin

if duff master they often blow fluid/air back in res, either something gone adrift in clutch housing so that slave has nothing to act against, slave leaking ,air leak ,master cylinder faulty ,clamp flexi pipe then see if you get a pedal

Final update: was out early this morning and did a bit more of a vigorous bleeding by actually pumping the clutch pedal then opening up the slave bleed valve then pushing the pedal down to release it. Did that with the help of me dad about 9 times I think, and now the clutch is working great. Clutch engages at about 5-7cm off of the floor so i think its good.

Thanks jamesmartin for the help/advice, much appreciated

cut a bit of wood and jam it in between the seatbox so as it keeps the clutch pedal on the floor or use a weight anyway as long as the pedal is kept on the floor then open bleed screw and top up master cylinder as needed it maybe take all day but it works great and lets you get on with other jobs dont forget to top up
