Priming fuel system after filter change.

I've just finished giving my 300 tdi a service, (first one since I got it a couple of weeks ago). After I changed to fuel filter, I tried to prime it by pushing the lever on the fuel lift pump up and down, but there was no resistance whatsoever and no fuel seemed to be going into the fuel filter. I tried for quite a while, then gave up and just tightened the bleed screw and started the engine. Everything seemed fine, so I took it on a drive for about 5 miles with no problem. Sorry if I appear a bit dim, but is this system self bleeding, or did something go wrong? Is there anything else I should be doing?

Did mine yesterday, all I did was tip a bit of fresh diesel in the new filter before fitting and everything is ok, I've just done a 30 mile round trip without any problems so you should be ok.

You sometimes have to turn the engine over using a spanner on the front pulley to get the lift pump off cam. But filling the new filter prior to fitting is the quickest way.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't fill the new filter with diesel. I just tightened up the bleed screw and started it up. I'm hoping it's bled itself through during the 5 mile drive.

yip, did exactly the same thing a few days ago. put the new filter on, tightened the bleed screw and drove to the chippie (the long way round) :car:

you are ok not priming the system as they more often than not start ok and bleed themselves.One tip though is dont rev the engine for a minute or two or the engine will die and then you will need to prime it.There is usually enough fuel in the pipes to allow it to bleed itself and all you need to do is fit your new filter and then start it and let it idle where you will probably hear the engine slow down and then pick up again.
