Hi all, Wonder if you could help. I'm trying to workout what I can get for what money.

I would like a Defender 200TDi for a cheap as possible would prefere some MOT. but not sure on what price I would expect to Pay, looking on ebay etx they seam to be up and down. the books say 1500 to 4000 for an early one but I've yet to see any down at the 1500 to 2000 price mark.

so any hints?

Edit: Was looking at 90 only but after speaking to someone think i may look at 110 as cheaper to buy and MPG is not that different!

you are right, between 2000 to 4000 smackaroons should do it. i paid 4000 for my k reg 90 back in 2003. 200tdi's are always going to be more expensive than n/a engines but they are more reliable and faster. parts are actually generally cheaper too - which is surprising!

4000 will get you a landrover that is about 10-15 years old depending on how it's been used, but beware that it will need a lot of work on it. do not buy a landrover from somewhere near the sea as the salty air corrodes the chassis. have a good check of the whole chassis and a poke around at the rear crossmember with a screwdriver. also check the front bulkhead for signs of corrosion, and if there is don't touch it with a barge pole! not for 4000 anyway! door bottoms aren't too much of a problem as you can re-weld these easily or disguise the corrosion with chequerplate.

don't expect something that you can leave in the driveway and do nothing with for months on end because that just aint landies! also don't go for something that's obviously been abused. good show of whether it's been sbused or not are the diff pans, which, when abused are sometimes dented or cracked. a dented diff pan aint the end of the world though and is pretty cheap to replace.
