that's what I always done with regards to the millers but then sometimes forgot , lol

tried the advanced to just see if it was just a sales trick , found it most effective in the winter time as I belive they out a special anti wax in the advance system

think that's pretty good with the synergy off, have u also got the switch inside the car, I got it on two settings , power and economy , number 2 on the box as any higher it seemed to upset my auto box

now nearly at 180,000 miles and like everyone else like to look after it the best I can ,

Yes I've got the switch, but found it pretty pointless. The whole units off the car currently, just while I sort the glitch out.
When it goes back on it will just be the Synergy on setting 2 without the switch.
If I go above setting 2 my autobox complains as well.

that's strange with regards to the autobox , good to know with comparing numbers on the synergy u get the same results

know when I had the box updated so could change the switch whilst going along , there was a great difference in not having it on there, was pleased getting the box back on

my maf setting is off by the way , using a Bosch one , with it on will produce black smoke ,

hope u get it sorted , know mine drove me nuts and then found some of the vacuum hoses were split right near the cra case breather pipe , as it sat in the little channel going across the engine , also holes at the vacuum pump and turbo actuator , but then snapped the small connection off the vacuum reservoir , stopped the engine hunting and brakes better , if that makes sense

prefer to use the additives of my choice + regular diesel fuel
'cause i don't necessarily trust the fuel retailer to put 'premium' fuel in their p.f. storage tank ..
have tried most 'premium' fuel brands .. favourite be Texaco .. er.. "supreme"

for an additive pre-mix
i use a 10 litre fuel can .. and pour in ..
7 litres of regular fuel
500 ml of 'diesel rhino' .. or .. 500 ml of 'millers eco'
1 litre of castrol mineral 2-stroke
( and if i've some unused ZX1 about .. 'ill add that in as well ..
( it bonds to metal at 60c temp. .. injector internals probably get that hot ..

give the mix-can a good shake ..
'n use the 2-stroke containers as additive dispensers .. 500 ml to 30 litres of regular fuel

once in a blue-moon i'll put in half-a-tank of Texaco supreme .. withOut my additive mix ..

~~~~
as to diff. between 'premium' and 'regular+mix' ..
read on a forum about a lab test done between shell-v and regular fuel
result was that the reg. fuel had more calorific energy content
then someone mention that shell had changed the formula a few times
early on .. tried shell-v .. and their regular stuff .. a few times ( sans any extra additives )
v-power ? .. yeah very smooth 'n quiet .. but second time i tried it power seemed a bit down
and mpg went down .. .. might have been other factors involved apart from the fuel ..
from their regular fuel i got a bit of diesel knock ..
umpteen miles later tried their fuels again .. same result ..
although .. what my mix does to the calorific content of regular fuel ..
i haven't a clue .. ( as far as scientific numbers are concerned )
engine were a bit knocky when i purchased the hippo ..
due to previous experience decided to look for some 'diesel-aid' additive
found out that said product be sold in the uk as 'diesel-rhino'
~~~~

bought the hippo on 37k miles
now has on 127k miles
engine runs strong .. smooth .. and relatively quiet for a diesel ..
*always starts on-the-button
has yet needed to visit the engine doctor ..
nor ever shown any signs / symptoms of needing to do so ..
( ok .. apart from needing the low pressure fuel pump replacing at 75k miles )
gets on average 40 mpg ..

* apart from mid-winter .. a tad more cranking needed ..
rekon it could do with some new glow-plugs for that ..

~~~~
so final preference be Jet or Texaco regular fuel plus my additive mix
thks for such an Informative post ,
I've got a bottle of that rhino in my shed and never used it as I wasn't adding anything due to using the advance after I had finished off using the millers
will try and find it but there was also a write up about using that rhino in an ultrasonic bath for injector cleaning ??
will have to try and find out where I saw it first , dooohhhhh
Yes, its always worth sticking some 2 stroke in, mineral not synthetic.
I think alot of the problems caused to diesels these days is down to that ultra low sulphur garbage they sell us.
I understand why they took it out, but it would have been a good idea to add a lubrication for older engines that were not developed to run on it.
be the only one that i'm certain of .. that contains an ingredient to combat
water-in-diesel-fuel
Yes, its always worth sticking some 2 stroke in, mineral not synthetic.
i just use it as an added precaution .. for pump / injector lubrication
I think alot of the problems caused to diesels these days is down to that ultra low sulphur garbage they sell us.
'n that common-rail injectors ( and h.p.pump ? ) .. have much finer internal clearances
than the older mechanical design injectors ..
plus the c.r. components use higher fuel pressure ..
that pressure plus possible contaminants = potential high rate of wear to the internal moving parts
then there's the various seals .. can't have them eaten up by contaminants
or drying out and failing to do their job ..
~~~~

a.f.a.i.k. .. they ( the additive boffins ) use a chemical type known as aromatics
to provide lubrication .. which used to be done by the sulphur content ..
diesel-rhino feels fairly slippery to the touch ..
( not tried the millers in that respect .. :) .. )

most additives found online include an ingredient pdf file
and the various chemicals .. 'n what they're used for ..
can be researched via google

Adding older type auto transmission oil would be a great cleaner, as it's a very refined mineral based oil. Not sure what the newer stuff would do?
I have got some Carlube ATF-U left over. I could put some of that through, but you owe me a pint if it all goes tits up;)
Mike

Not sure what the newer stuff would do?
what's the diff. between the new 'n old ??
( as in .. without resorting to google .. i do not know )

just before i had the lp.pump changed ..
i shoved some 10/30 oil in the tank .. ( maybe it were 10/40 )
simply as i had no other use for it .. and i had 1 litre of it ..
thought .. may as well burn it with the diesel
soon after had the l.p. pump failure symptom of rpm hitting-a-brick-wall
but .. the fuel filter was way beyond change-time ..
so whether it were the pump or filter .. i don't know ..
pump were a bit noisy 'n had 75k miles .. so replaced that as well
if there were a connection to adding the oil to the fuel .. i don't know either ..
but won't be doing it again :)

I have got some Carlube ATF-U left over. I could put some of that through, but you owe me a pint if it all goes tits up
fair enough :) .. could use an excuse to take the dog walkies in a different part of yorks
but if it were to go tits skyward .. a free pint won't fix it ..

The newer synthetic stuff is based on stuff they get from natural gas!!
Anyway, I had a sneaky peak at the spec sheet, and tbh, there's nothing in there that's not in other additives.

As for shoving the 10w40 oil through, that was just bad timing. Diesels will burn virtually any oil based stuff as long as you mix it with a good glug of diesel.

And can you still get that Bass Exhibition ale in Bradford, cos it's the only place I've ever had it. But not been over there lately, apart from driving through.

:eek: .. mmm that's interesting ..
am fairly clueless about auto trannies ..
except that the FL2 auto i drove for a few days .. was lightyears ahead of prev. older auto boxes driven by moi
( pre-1980 types ) ..

And can you still get that Bass Exhibition ale in Bradford,
i presume so ..
couldn't really say .. as .. well .. i don't lean towards the partaking of like beverages
generally ..
if i do for some reason .. then it's guiness .. or ..
http://www.wychwood.co.uk/beers/

last time i had some beer were 3 years back on my 60th ..
had 2 halves of guiness .. 'n 2 mineral waters ..
got pulled over by the cops on my way home ..
breathalised for the first time ever ( zero reading ) ..
( they actually were looking for ppl poaching livestock
( it were 1am out in the countryside ..

was a time when i did consume quite a bit .. sometime way too much ..
got right sick
simply don't fancy it no more .. as all it does is make me sleepy
plus giving me major sinus headaches ..

shame .. as i right liked some of the various flavours .. taste wise ..
( never heard of 'ale' 'till i came to the uk ..
( tried it .. tasted good ..

cheers for the great response, nice to know I'm not going loopy with regards to the improvement of using the advance diesel

when I first used it found it started to smoke a little bit for a few tank fills, then cleared up after I gave it a good boot ful , maybe that's the advance fuel additives working and getting rid of the junk

imagine if using the advanced and also adding the millers wouldn't do the engine much good by raising the octane that much , or would it clean out the injectors quicker

sorry asking a dim question

Like having a curry after an enema?

As with all octane(petrol) cetane(diesel) boosters, there's a limit after which you will effect the ignition timing.
I did once try premium texaco with Millers, but I think I reached the limit of cause/effect, as it just drank the whole tank and did about 20mpg!
So I wouldn't bother.
Mike

I know supermarket fuel is disliked, unfortunately I seem to live in an area flush with supermarkets fuel stations (asda/morrisons/sainsburys), the few bp/shell/texaco/jet stations there are near me are at least 5p+ more per litre for regular diesel.
I have always found sainsburys diesel better than asda/morrisons with previous cars, so my question is if I put millers in with sainsburys diesel will there be any benefit?

I Have now done 2 tanks of BP ultimate, first tank was 35mpg, fill up today returned 33.99mpg, FL1 commercial 135K 55 plate.

Today fled up with esso normal diesel.

My driving doesn't change much, furthest single run I do is about 50 miles, town traffic, bypasses, the occasional motorway.

Hope that helps..

Edit forgot to say I thnk the engine runs slightly better on tick over, never had a problem starting ( that's probably put a spanner in the works )

Honestly - go to a reputed seller of fuel - test it - and if it runs fine - eventually - then stick with it - I really see no point in adding ANY 'additives' to a reasonably good fuel. there is simply no point. (snake oil) -
If you have just purchased the vehicle, with an unknown history, and it runs a bit like a bag of spanners, then just feed it decent known quality fuel and do the Italian tune up. It will be fine.
Old Wive's tales such as two stroke oil etc - are simply that.
The big issue with crappy fuels is diesel wash - your cylinders lose compression due to lack of the necessary build up of deposits leading to a good compression seal. There are SOME helpful products out there - but 99.9 % are snake oil.
Mind over matter - they sell them - it doesn't matter.......................... :(

IF you have an issue - and IF decent fuel can help - then it will take many hundreds - if not thousands of Km to sort - the is no such thing as a quick fix.

There is absolutely and utterly no way on this tiny little blue and green planet that any person can differentiate ANY form of loss or gain of fuel consumption between individual - or even 'ten' 'fill ups' - if they believe they can they are misguided - at best - and in reality utterly deluded - they simply do not understand the basics

There are some cases where the wear has become so pronounced that you get misfires at certain revs at on a specific cylinder. there is nothing you can do regarding this apart from changing the injector and praying. :) .... preferably rebuild the engine instead of trying to blame the 'issue' on a 'known problem' with that engine - - cough cough - BS - as #'some# have been known to do here..... ----- leak off tests are also very subjective and mostly misquoted.

Also - ANY ronbox or synergy whatever can NEVER - EVER give you - improved - fuel figures. - simply NOT possible.

Enjoy
Joe:)
