Does anyone know what this is in english?

I spoke to a Bolivian fella the other day (because he's worked on landies/Santana's all his life) about the horrible noise and dirty black smoke that my old girl is making.

I sparked her up for him to listen to the engine and his diagnosis after about 10 seconds with his head under the bonnet was - precámara de culata/culato (because of his accent I couldn't distinguish the last vowel sound and I didn't want to ask him to repeat).

Any ideas? Prechamber something?
 
more info needed..petrol or diesel...could mean timing out...black smoke if diesel could be timing...here in Portugal they use different. names for diag and Google trans doesn't help...we call discs others rotors but theyre both brake parts Google translate doesn't sometimes get it right...
 
@Extreedoc thank mate. Sounds like a mess to fix. I'll get it into a "taller" then.

@Shippers Sorry, diesel. I was playing with the timing a few months ago to try to get rid of a knock, which worked for a while. Maybe I've done more damage than good. Cheers for the reply
 
Sounds that might be a possible place to start...maybe post in engine section on here...when you moved timing you mean injection pump?...if you do that always mark starting point so you can return to it....sounds like its over fueling...

To your engine: You say it is making a horrible noise, is it a rattle?, in which case it could be a loose hot-spot which is what your Bolivian mechanic seems to be referring to. Head off to fix that. You might have injector issues as well. It needs investigation, you don't want that hot-spot rattling around in there. Get the timing right too.
 
A loose hotspot can wreak havok. I have had one punch through the head gasket and damage the block face and piston bad enough to scrap the block and head. Early investigation required.
If it is just a rattle and lots of smoke it may well be an injector. With the engine on tickover slacken the fuel union to each injector in turn to release pressure. If the rattle stops you have found the faulty one. If the injectors have good spray pattern set them to pop off at 130 / 135 bar. Be sure to remove the sealing washers and replace with new ones the correct way up.
