From the parsing of and punctuation in that sentence, you do have a point.

To parse, in grammatical terms, is to make sense of sentence structure, so
parsing is the act of making sense of sentence structure.

> I don't think it's taught anywhere these days.

Used to be, way back when ..

When we were taught parsing it used to be one of the best parts of the
English Language lesson. We were allowed to swear, in the pursuance of
knowledge .. which, as youngsters, we thought was really 'big' ... ;)

I loved it. It was a real eye-opener when I went to high school. It had
never occurred to me that there were such delights as grammar analysis and I
wanted to do it all the time. At my godfather's house (he had a lot of books
despite paper shortages) I remember opening a Dickens novel and trying to
parse it. For an eleven year old that was quite tough ...

recommended by someone I met on jury service so I know when it was :)

Its actual title is, "Eats, Shoots and Leaves". Lynn Truss.

Someohow that doesn't surprise me .. it's a new book to me, I must have
missed it when it first came out.

See above .. I only roughly remembered the title, and I haven't read it
all yet, it's over at one of my schools and I dip in and out infrequently.

The Panda reference related to a dictionary definition of pandas which used
the words "Eats, shoots and leaves". It amused the author so much that she
collected similar solecisms.

I could have furnished her with many just from newsgroups :)

But none, of course, from Paul - xxx

And there was me thinking it refered to the old schoolboy joke about the
panda that went to the prostitute....
