P38A Power steering pump not working

Hi all
Driving to work this morning I heard a loud metallic bang coming from under the P38. Thought I had driven over something until the engine management light came on, then problems with the auto gearbox and revs increased & decreased. When in neutral the revs went up to 1200rpm, ok in drive. However, after I parked, the engine kept stalling when engaging reverse.
I started the car 2 hours later, there was a rattling sound then engine stalled. The engine eventually ran with revs at 1200rpm - max 2000rpm (limp mode?) This was when I noticed that the steering was very heavy. Had a quick look, belt is ok and turning. I suspect the power steering pump is not working. No leaks and still has fluid in the reservoir.
I can't get the car in for diagnostic testing until the steering is fixed. Any ideas?

You will have to remove the steering pump and take a look at it.
 
Belt may be OK but does it move when the engine is running? Engine management light etc suggests no volts. Could be something other than the power steering pump has seized or failed.
 
Yes the belt is turning the pump. I think I have two faults that I need to deal with. I am at work just now, so I'll get the AA to get the car home so that I can have a proper look at it
 
The AA suggested that the timing chain may be slightly stretched or the crank & cam sensors are out of sync. going to fit a replacement power steering pump this weekend.

It would help if as suggested in the very first post at top of page, you had given details of car.

If you remove the crank sensor to check it what ever you do DO NOT remove the bracket it sits on. Only remove sensor from bracket. Next time you see the AA man tell him P38 diesels don't have cam sensors.
