Be patient!

Has it ever let you down? You always get there, and so with another engine you might get there a little sooner - so what? Leave a little earlier, drive relaxed.

As Dicomania found in his 90 with a Sherpa 2.5NA diesel. once you learn to drive it smoothly and always in the right gears, you can make surprisingly good progress.

As someone pointed out, the Def 90 weighs nearly two tons, and with a 3.5 ton trailer on the back that makes well over FIVE TONS, and you have about 70 bhp total going flat out at 4,000 rpm. The power to weight ratio puts you in the same class as a not very powerful TRUCK, so you need to drive like the trucks, steady driving all the way. There's no point in trying to hurry because it won't.

With about half a tank of fuel on board, add a gallon of the cheapest engine oil you can find to the fuel tank. It increases the viscosity of the fuel and compensates for a little wear in the injection pump. If you filter it nicely the oil could be USED engine oil.

It is also possible in all pumps to increase the maximum fuelling, but that's entering Indian Territory ....

Think you are doing really well with your power mate...got an 89 TD 90 myself and towing a 1300kg caravan brings 45 on even the smallest gradient. Am opting for a recon 200tdi engine. Will let you know the difference but have heard it should be big. However be carefull with that sort of weight on the back cause if you push it in a 90 which is short wheel base your gonna come a ****ing cropper !

yeah we are very sensble about how we load the trailer fortunately its a double axle so the distribution of weight isnt all on the hitch and we load it low as the thing can be loaded very high in which case it tends to swerve in the wind...its a nightmare to drive!

For clarities sake this is what we tow...this is relatively unladen probably 1/5 of what we usually carry.

Fook me i wudnt expect any 4x4 to tow that at more than 50mph, its huge! 3.5 tons is on the limit remember too, so wudnt put any pressure on the engine by adding after market parts that arent designed to worrk 100% with the engine standard.
Go for a 300 TDI definately, got one in my defender 90, pulls like an absolute train, little speed lost on even the biggest of hills :D. off topic but had a **** in a focus the other day try to overtake, smurk was soon removed from his face when i floored it and he had to pull back behind me! Brill! good luck with whatever you decide anway.

14 meters .... that's FORTY FIVE FEET!

There must be a law against it.

I bet it's fun on roundabouts and little country roads.
