My father and I bought a P38 2.5DSE (97-98) today and she seems to run sweet as a nut except there appears to be an intermittent fault.

When driving up a fairly steep road it seemed to lose power all of a sudden to the point where we were in first gear (should be a 4th gear hill) and at the same time the temp gauge rose extremely quickly. we slackened off before hitting the red.

It did it twice on two separate occasions but when trying to replicate the fault to work out what was going on we can't get it to do so.

Coolant level seems fine however we did top it up as my father took the cap off while still hot and managed to let it spill out. Fan is running fine. Although temp gauge showed high I wouldn't have said the engine smelled hot. The hill is literally 1/4mile long at most.

Any suggestions?

the water pump on these engines have a crap plastic impeller fitted to them, get a new water pump but make sure it has the metal impeller fitted.the plastic one breaks into bits and causes this problem,or can do.;)

Thanks lads for the suggestions so far.

Haven't had the chance to fix anything et however I do have a few more observations:

Pulling a trailer today at around 1500kg
Seemed to be going fine til just before turning in home - we live up a long hill - where the motor started to heat up towards red line.
By the time we got to the top of our drive (250m) it had dropped the temperature back down to near normal.
There appeared to be a slight spray of water on the right hand side of the trailer.
The oil is jet black (needs changing) - though no greyness whatsoever
Oil cap is fine
