Potentially Expensive Issue....

OK, so its cold, snowy and I'm skint after Christmas and have the wife's 30th Birthday to pay out for next week, so the last thing I need at the moment is a major problem, or at least a potentially major problem with the Rangie.....

There seems to be an issue with the Auto Box, in that the change up from what I believe is First, to Second isn't as smooth as it should be - it seems to hold itself in the lower gear longer than normal (almost as if it was in SPORT mode (or what we laughingly call Sport Mode!)) and then when it changes up, it seems to be a struggle, and almost if its forcing itself into the higher gear.....

There aren't any warning messages being displayed or any evident noises (other than the racket that a Diesel makes when its cold normally!)

Any ideas??

Sounds like you have a sticky govenor. Old alumininium and steel parts don't mix to well. I've heard of people having them stripped down and cleaned / refurbed but more often it is a sign of generally tired box. It's worth trying some of the autobox remedies in a bottle and an oil and filter change.

if the oil is low then also if full of swarf it will freeze much easier forceing the governor to be slow.
See if you have time to warm it up nice then try it.It is cold.

Trouble is to get the govenor out to clean it you have to take the transfer box off, and the labour cost of the cleaning job is about £50 less than having a new box fitted (not including the cost of the box itself of course) and there is no guarentee cleaning it will work. Its better to replace the govenor as the labour is so expensive to do it twice.

You could get used box fitted , but there is no guarentee that it will work as the box might be duff and or there will still be crap in the system from the old box to block uup the govenor on the new one/used one.

I laid out £350 all in on a RRC to have the govenor out and replaced (the govenor is £112 new) and it still didnt solve the problem, in the end had to get the box recond for £850 so really the £350 was a waste!

At least with a full recon job you get warrenty against there still being crap in the system which is why I went for that option in the end, and £850 was cheap for a recon supply and fit!

Autobox's= big numbers!

Well, in typical fashion, three months after the problem arose, I've still done sod all about it....

In my defence, I've had a fair few issues, partly stemming from sheer lack of time but also because some bellend in a van decided he didn't like the back of the Rangie whilst following me on the M25 and decided that he wanted to re-arrange it (either that, or he wanted to sit on my back seat!) so I've only recently got it back from the BodyShop (I had a REALLY nice VW Touareg V6 TDi as a hire car!!).... But, following the accident, my back and neck are screwed so doing anything to the Rangie is rather difficult!

I've got a Autobox service kit - filter, sump seal and O rings - just got to get some fluid tomorrow or saturday then try and give it a go to see if a fluid and filter change makes any difference - if the Back lets me.....

Got to get something done before Monday, as we are going to Dorset for a few days with the kids to try and put the last few months behind us......

If I can't get under the Rangie, I've got to use it to go to Dorset anyway - there is no way that we are going to get us and all our gear in the wife's tiny RollerSkate!

Oh I have thought hard (I've had 3 months!) - got to do something, even if its just checking and topping up the fluid!

I can't face a nearly 400 mile round trip with 4 of us, plus all the kids "kit" in an Audi A2!!

Still, I could just wait until I get the Compo (if I get any) for the accident and splash out on a new AutoBox - ooooh the anticipation!

rule number one, last minute repairs are risky.
I'd sooner check the oil isn't black top it up if needs be, I'm off on a 4000 mile jolly in a vr6 multivan in a bit.
Will have it for a month before hand for all service work etc-ie so it can't **** up at last minute.

Sounds perfectly reasonable - last minute repairs (especially when its me doing them) aren't a good idea....

I'll try and check the level and colour tomorrow (why the hell did LR delete the dipstick/filler on later models? NumbNuts!!)

filter and oil change, if the atf has a brownish tint to it (u cant alway's tell on the dip stick so drain a cupfull from the sump) when uv'e got the sump off av a look at the filter if it has a grayish film on it then it needs changing defo, u will need a good set of quality star keys not the cheap bendy ones as the filter fixings can be quite tight, u shouldn't need a new sump gasket just make sure the mating surfaces are clean, my p38 2.5 diesel had similar probs the differance was unbelievable.
