I have a 2016 Land Rover discovery sport while driving a warning light saying engine “oil critically low” came on. Stopped and topped up the oil,a day or so later the car went into limp mode with white smoke coming out the exhaust. It was then sat for about 6 months because I didn’t have the money to get it fixed or looked at.
The battery is obviously really flat so while trying to start, the engine is trying but not actually starting so will buying a new battery help?
I’m getting the following codes on the diagnostic machine
-Park/neutral Switch Input Circuit
-Transfer Case Neutral Or Park/neutral Indication Circuit.
-Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit
-Mass Or Volume Air Flow - Circuit Range/performance
Anyone with any advice on what could be causing the issues as I’ve had a quote of 14k being told it needs a new engine!! If so it will just be being scrapped, which is a shame as it’s a lovely clean car.
I have no experience with anything mechanical.
Any advice would be much appreciated, many thanks.

So many questions and so little information ?
Who gave you the quote ? What did they say ? They clearly looked at it more than anyone here has and know more than you do.

What is the voltage on the battery ? Can you charge it ? clearly a battery charged will start easier than a battery flat (if at all) but there could be other reasons.

I would start with the basics first
1. Check coolant water levels.
2. Oil level
3. Dash display or diagnostic machine.
Sensors can fail and effect the engine function causing limp modes
When you last drove did you have it serviced previously. Recharge the battery first unless it overdue replacement period.
Do you have RAC AA green flag rescue services as they will have restart and diagnostic machine too.
A quote is just a quote bupkiss.

Thanks for your reply. Coolant levels are all fine and I’ve just done an oil change so all that is good. The diagnostic machine is bringing up
-Park/neutral Switch Input Circuit
-Transfer Case Neutral Or Park/neutral Indication Circuit.
-Intake Air Temperature Sensor Circuit
-Mass Or Volume Air Flow - Circuit Range/performance
I havnt had the car serviced since having it as this has happed within the first 6 months of owning the car, and the garage it was from has gone bankrupt so can’t even go to them.
The garage it went to was through the insurance as it was reversed into and they won’t send me a report of what they found, just gave me a quote of 14k for a new engine.
Easiest thing to do is scrap it I think.

That garages "report" isn't one, so the quote is/was pointless.
If they know enough to tell you to replace the engine then they must know something.

I'd get a battery you can jumpstart from, or one of those starter packs, and go from there.

Just to be clear. And I know now't about this model.
6 months ago you were getting white smoke so parked it up.
Then someone reversed into it so insurance company sent it for a quote.
£14k for new engine.
What about bodywork repair?
What have insurance company said?

Sounds like they want the work and money. Considering the information is paltry in saying an engine replacement. I would ask for a report from the insurance company to justify scrapping the vehicle.
What can be a thousand reasons why you should scrap, might just be a simple few things to fix with a few hundred pounds.
If engine has destroyed itself then a cost breakdown must be sorted.
My guess insurance have seen a regular pattern for the vehicles, add time consuming replacement compared to resale value after.
Pending how much you bought it for originally and the seller gone bust so warranty defunct this shows how fickle insurance are.🤨

So from the beginning
The car got reversed into in a car park and it went through the insurance to get the body work fixed, the day before the car was due to be dropped off at the garage that’s when the white smoke came from the engine? Went into limp moat and then wouldn’t start.
The insurance company agreed to pick the car up to have a look because it was a little weird how it happens just as there insurances driver hit us, was in the garage with them for 6 months. Got a phone call to say the vehicle will be returned to me as they deem the engine problem wasn’t caused by the accident, was sent £1200 as that’s what they said the damage would cost to be fixed. Asked for the report on the car and still waiting months later, now saying they don’t have it.
So the car is now just stuck on my drive doing my head in!

Thanks for your advice mate, much appreciated. As I’ve said the insurance company in question is now saying they can’t supply the report, sounds like a lot of …. To me!

Were you driving it after the damage but before the engine stopped?
Just wondering if the front end damage caused an oil leak.

Yes we was able to drive the car fine for a good 3 weeks or so after the damage. And that was my thought exactly, maybe it caused an oil leak as the car was serviced when we brought it (well they said it was) so surely the oil shouldn’t have been critically low within that 6 month time frame.its hard trying to fight insurance company’s for anythin!

So the insurance company will say you shouldn't have been driving it until it had been assessed. Sadly I think you'll have a job proving you didn't cause the issue.
