Not at all but nice guess,
I just see so many people buy bag of ****e defenders that have been bodged by so called home garage mechanic gurus. There are loads of dodgy ****e defenders that have been abused and neglected out there , but hey your right - load of bollox.
They never see a hard life or are misused. Go ahead and let him buy the first one he sees. Hope he has deep pockets or the gurus on here bail him out when the common faults arrive. He has already stated he wanted one that did not need repairs or work doing.
Crack on lads - as you were ;)
So were are you seeing them? And how is it any different to ANY other make/model of vehicle.

As you say that neither of you have driven one before I am guessing you are not very familiar with them. Everyone else has mentioned the driving style etc so will not go on about that again but you say you are looking for a 90 but just make sure a 90 will suit your needs as they are very small for a such a large vehicle. if you put the dog in the back it will become a 2 seater. if you put luggage/shopping/etc in the back it will become a 2 seater and have no room for the dog. A 90 has roughly the same external dimensions as a golf but it is far less practical in how it uses it load space.
I see what you are saying. But I'd personally say they make good use.

Wide enough to seat 3 across in the front (accepting the middle seats wasn't offered on the Puma's).

And if you have rear benches you can seat 6 in the back if they aren't large people. But min of 4 in the back is easy with benches or individual seats. Not many vehicles of this size can seat 7 to 9 people.

A modern Golf is 169" long in hatchback form. A 90 from bumper to rear crossmember is only 142", so significantly shorter. And remember the Golf is transverse engine not longitudinal.

For reference a Pug 106 is nearly 145" long.

I see your point but in a golf you can carry 5 people and boot full of luggage which you would struggle with in a 90. Three across the front is not practical for anything other than really dire situations, and anyone larger than a 12 year old will struggle even then. It was more of a making sure the vehicle is suitable, and considering looking at a 110 for size difference as the op openly admits they do not know about defenders. No point getting one and it being unsuitable due to its size, there are plenty of other things for people not used to them to find unsuitable and dislike!
A 110 does not need to be a station wagon either. Mine is a hardtop with window sides and 4 side facing individual seats so I can carry 6 people and the dog and luggage. In the 90 I have currently (engine fire means 110 is currently being rebuilt) I can carry two people and then have a choice of dog, people or luggage but cannot do any combination because of the size of the rear load area. The dog on his own is a tight fit but I have a large dog.

They can seat 3 in the front and 4 in the back, but not in great comfort, and not for any length of time.

I don't think there are many, if any Golfs among the regulars now either.

Forum choice now seems to be Ford Focus or Mondeo, or a Merc if you want German.

4wd, many have gone to Jeep, because they are at least as good, and much better value.

If you want a hobby vehicle, or something for the weekend (Fnarr, Fnarr!) a Series is going to be much better value than a Defender.

Completely different. My mate works for WPD, and they bought one of the last batches of Pumas that were made in 2016.
We went up to the yard and had a look round them. Every single one had surface rust on the rear chassis, Poor quality paint, and Badly fitting body panels.

No other motor manufacturer could get away with selling vehicles like that.

I am sure their current vehicles are much better:rolleyes:

Some of the Pumas are still going. Some have been sold on.
The choice for the staff that get that kind of vehicle now is Ford Ranger or Isuzu.
Some of the staff were sceptical at first, but now quite like them, they are more comfortable than the Defenders.
They don't really care if they knacker them up anyway, because they don't pay to fix them.

My mate doesn't have one anyway, a van is fine for the work he does.

Pmsl if you doubt there are 2012 onwards pumas without any issues then seriously mate i have to question your sanity o_O.
I have seen numerous 2012 onwards 5hit bucket defenders that are only fit for being spares or scrapped and crushed. Some have complete rot from being submersed in deep water, some have structure damage to the underneath from abusive off road driving.
I have worked for 30 years repairing and installing air suspension to all vehicles . so I get to look underneath them on a regular basis. As for it being any different from any other make and model. Model what land rover or any car?

Sanity is fine. As is the 2012 90 we have on the farm. But thanks for asking....

Lots of Puma's where sold to privateers not just commercial enterprises though. Don't know the figures, but I'd guess a large percentage have never been off road.

As for surface rust. At this age that is hardly terminal or unexpected. A 2012 is of course nearly 10 years old. And this is something they have always suffered with. But yes, it is a bit ****e. However I'm not convinced that means ALL Puma models should be tarred with the same brush by saying all of them are horrendous wrecks to be avoided. Plenty will be very very tidy.

The pic above shows the 2012 we have on the farm and hard top is on a 65 plate, although delivered in 2016. It too is one of the very last. Neither have had any issues apart from the heater ducting not being fitted correctly on the 65 plate when new.
