Possible to get rid of ACE pump, or easier to change pipes?

Hi LR lovers!
Had my disco2 (2001) off the road for about 10m now and it's driving me crazy seeing it sitting on the drive doing nothing - it's become a glorified storage shed!
I had what I now know to be the ACE pump light come on last year, took it to the garage (non LR) to see what it was and the guy didn't know....so I ended up blowing the pump  . Bought a new one and had it fitted, but LR garage said ALL the pipes now need replacing. Had a quote from them of e3.5k (e1.5k for parts, e2k for labour), I can't afford this hence the disco now stood on the drive.
What would be the solution, to get rid of the ACE altogether (would I need springs then instead of the airbags - they are run via a FASkit at the mo), or to get some pipes made (friend suggested a HGV place that could make them at a better price than buying from LR UK online - I'm in France) and try to replace the ACE pipes myself (dad, not me ;) )
Any advice welcome, but a novice when it comes to this stuff, so plain English please :D Thanks!

Lol, if only it had been 10 mins ;)
Thanks Biggeeeee, your list is excellent, will let my dad and hubby have a look, they will understand it much better than me :tea:

Some people recommend hydralic spacialists and getting them to make pipes for a fraction of the cost

Sooo glad mine didnt come with ACE, one less thing to go wrong. A D2 without it drives perfectly well especially on standard rear air suspension. Get rid!
(Massive improvement over a D1 - I drove my dads on a twisty road and it was like piloting a boat:eek:)

it's just an oppinion so please no offence but IMO everybody should buy the car he wants with or without enhancements cos there are options from tactory rather than pay more on a well equipped car then ''downgrade'' it by removing systems just to be cheaper...i hate this ACE to classic ARB and SLS to coils conversion hysteria

next time when the engine makes tricks get rid of that too and drive it like the Flintstones :( ... it's cheaper and healthy for the heart :D

also there are methods to fix it below the price of a conversion, the pipes can be done for life like this http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/discovery-ace-conversion-154565.html and due to the "get rid of the ACE" madness the market is full of cheap working valve blocks, pumps and ECUs cos there are many owners who are converting them only due to a pipe leak, e'g
LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 TD5 ACE PUMP
Discovery ACE Valve Block | eBay

so IMO if you bought a car with ACE better fix it and be proud you have a well enhanced vehicle cos it makes the difference , see this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4opZF1mDjM

I found the system pretty good, but the occasional fault light while we were away in Europe decided the issue.

Ours was a November 1998 build so the pipes were getting a bit crusty.

I had the conversion parts for a couple of years before I actually did the job last June, and it made no real difference to the handling of the car at all that I could notice.

Less things to go wrong and no real hassle to do.

I think we binned the take off parts, mine and our son's D2 which was done first.

IMO you binned a well engineered system due to a £60 pressure transducer... the difference is huge if the car is full and has a loaded roof rack too... that's it, each on it's own

Don't use a roof rack, and I can't seriously consider driving a car any distance with a chassis full of rusted pipes. Would you drive the car with your brake pipes in that condition? No, thought not.

It may be well engineered in your view, but the implementation was pretty poor and the price of spares exhorbitant. Assembling the piping to the chassis before the body was fitted might have helped production, but it's a complete mess if you have to replace pipes, or even take the old pipes out, some have to be cut into pieces to get them out of the chassis.

If the pipes are replaced with flexibles and the leaking rams sorted out and the pump is working OK, it's a good system, but it's 17 years old this year and probably well past its sell-by date.

Peter

PS: I have a near new valve block, and a pump (not off my car) if anyone wants to buy them.

not sure what others think but i have removed my sls and ace recently but wish i could have had time to fix the ACE instead of converting to conventional ARBs
it DOES make a huge different in the corners
cant say the same thing for airbags at the back as i was kind of worried of having 2 bags at the rear on a 15 yr old car. (you can always renew them but SLS is not my cup of tea as i am not towing)

I think the trouble is, you have to spend a lot of time finding one that doesn't have a chassis made of cheese. You don't get much choice in what options come with it

I am very impressed with the drive with the ACE fitted and would have to be presented with a potentially big bill to get rid.

Drive one without it, you will be surprised at how good it is on conventional anti-roll bars.

Ours was done last June, and we've towed fully loaded with no issues and carried some very heavy kit in the back as well.

It's never going to be a racing car in cornering anyway, you'll reach the limits on tyre adhesion before anything else.

Peter

Lister you may be right. I am comparing to my old Disco 1 I to be fair and I gather theres a fair difference between the 1 and 2 even without the ACE etc.
