possible alternator problem and removal advice please

OK,
So I've just got a new battery as my car kept dying. I've put it on and put a voltmeter on and its still showing about 12.7v I.e. its not going up to to 13.?v etc. So I've drawn the conclusion its the alternator am I right in saying that?

Does anyone have the removal and refit instructions for a 1.8 petrol?

I'd say that's pretty close to where it should be for chrging , I'm guessing uve still got a starting issue/battery issue?
Did you get a big enough battery like a 680 720 cold cranking amps?
Make sure the terminals or tight also, does the lights dim when trying to start?

Absolute minimum voltage across the battery when charging is 13.4v. A lead acid battery, at rest, would be between 12.4v and 12.8v.

If the minimum charging voltage is not obtained from the alternator, the battery will simply lose it's charge.

Now I've changed the battery (to a high amperage) there is no starting or battery issue. I just worry if I go out and it runs the battery down that I'll be stuck in the middle of nowhere!. May go on a close drive and take my multimeter with me

Jonny, it's simple. place a voltmeter across your battery terminals and rev the engine. You MUST obtain a minimum of 13.2v - 13.4v for the battery to maintain/charge.

Actually isn't 12.7v prob about the output of the battery?, could he be doing it wrong when checking?

12.7 will be battery voltage, 12.6 is fully charged, anything over is called a surface charge, when the alternator is working its should show more than battery voltage to be able to put charge in but the regulated max is 14.4v you'd want to see close to this ideally when everything is in good working order

Ok, now I'm going to seen very stupid in saying thisas a qualified mechanic.....
But, after changing alternator, belt and battery I decided to check the fuses. And guess what!
The fuse that said ALT under the dash had blown.
Luckily I needed to take alternator off for ease of changing exhaust manifold. And I now have a good battery for my caravan!
I feel stupid but felt I needed to respond in thanks for all your replys
So thank you from a stupid freelander owner
