Hi all, as the title suggests my windscreen wipers are possessed. They only turn on when I want, that's no problem but they sweep between 10-12 for a bit then end up 10-2 then have ended up sweeping 1-2. Oh, and one of them flew off whilst I was driving down the road, they're really erratic. They never wipe the same place for any level of time.

Any ideas on what it could be?

Doubt it is anything to do with park switch, have just renewed my landys whole system as was getting nowhere messing with a worn out system.Sorted:)

So you reckon re new the lot?

I have noticed when the windscreen dries up the sweep gets shorter, wondering whether it's a weak motor?

I think you will find the shorter sweep on a dry windscreen, is due to the increase in friction of the wiper blades on the screen hiding the backlash in the system.
tottot did you just replace the wheel boxes and cable to cure you problems ?

Spindles held on with a grub screw. If these are loose your wipers will do exactly as you are describing. I always keep an allen key of the right size in the vehicle for this inevitable eventuality.

Hi K14,I renewed wheel boxes, drive cable, spindel adaptors, blade holder arms and motor unit on my twenty seven year old Landy as the wipers had had a lot of use here in West Wales. Cheers.

Renewed all mine a while back. DO NOT use Britpart wheel boxes, spend the extra money and get Bearmach ones. It will save you a lot of hassle. I made that mistake. The Britpart ones are very poor quality made to much broader tolerances. The cable would barely engage the toothed wheels in the boxes because they were so badly made and they kept juddering and slipping all over the place. Get Bearmach cable and wheel boxes and it will work properly. It's also worth changing the parking switch while you have the dashboard stripped as it's so cheap and easy to do. The parking switch is the white connector on the wiper motor.

The other thing that can make a big difference is changing the wiper relay. The location of this differs in different vehicles but mine was behind the instruments as it's a 2006 model. The old one came to pieces in my hand as I attempted to remove it. A decent branded one (mine was a Lucas I think, rather than a Britpart special) and all my troubles are over.

Me too. The little grub screw corroded on mine a new set solved it.

If you've not changed the cable, that will need doing as well. I made the mistake of changing my wheelboxes without doing the cable. They wipe a lot better now but they still slip a little. It's on my todo list.
