Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice please.

Getting out of my Rangie 200tdi into my 'new' 300tdi manual Disco - I can't believe how flat the engine feels below about 2000rpm. The Rangie felt like it would drive up the side of a house from virtually standstill but the Disco feels totally different (and worse)

This is beginning to do my head in now. So far I have done the following:

EGR blanked off and intercooler cleaned (no difference)
K&N Air Filter (no difference)
Silicone hoses (slight improvement)
De-cat pipe (no difference)
Turned 'smoke' screw clockwise a bit (slight improvement)

The Disco goes really well after 2000rpm - but under that it's hardly powerful enough to drive up a hill. Is it just a characteristic of the engine v. 200tdi - ie 300 is revvier?

Many thanks

Will

Is your lift pump OK?

The Bosch VE pump specification does actually permit it to be used without a lift pump, however when they are ran through a knackered lift pump they do tend to need some more revs to get the rotary vane pump in the injection pump spinning before they draw fuel well, it also usually results in a limited top end though.

To check it I would undo the bleed bolt on top of the filter housing, then operate the manual lever, diesel should fairly quickly start to shoot out. If not, try turning the engine over a blimp on the starter to get the pump off cam else it will not pump.

Sounds normal for a 300, they do suffer with no boost below 2000 rpm. Have a look for the sluggish disco thread, will tell you how to tweak the pump settings to get rid of the flat spot by increasing off boost fuelling. Doing the smoke screw on it's own doesn't really do much

I've notice since I've been towing a lot more, mine is gutters off the turbo from tick over, plenty of fuel as there's black smoke, it's a 300 tdi 90 I've tweaked the pump and its just had a new intercooler water pump timing belt and rockers and pushrods.

I'm gona check the pump timing again but after that I have no idea.

Thanks for the input all - I'm going to have a look for that sluggish disco thread. I will check the lift pump and also see if I can tweak the off boost fuelling a bit. Def no problem with turbo - it goes like a train after 2,000 rpm.

Thanks again

After some advise on my '94 300tdi Disco, which is running real "Flat"....This started suddenly, after being dunked in gloop (sloppy mud on a pay'n'play" session) for a while.

Fueling/turbo hasnt been touched, & I'd like to get the motor "Back to standard", before tweeking the pump etc.

I've cleaned out the sedimenter/filter thingy by the rear-wheel.
Rad & Intercooler cleaned (Externally)
New Fuel-filter.
New Lift pump
K&N Filter (Couple of years ago)
Silicon hoses (Couple of years ago)
De-EGR'd (Couple of years ago)
De-Cat & mid-box removed (Couple of years ago)
Timing/belt checked a couple of weeks ago, all OK.
Great starter
No Black smoke
Recently fitted a Turbo-boost gauge: & Under load get the following (Approx):
0-1500rpm: No boost
1500-2000rpm: 0.2-0.3 boost
2000-30000rpm: 0.3-0.7 boost
3000-Redline: 1.0 (1.1 seen occasionally)

Should I be getting a bit more boost at lower engine speeds?
Whilst driving, the vehicle drives like a 2.5NA...no feeling of turbo-boost at all, which I USED to get.

Any suggestions on what/where to look next?

Thanks in advance.
