Poor low end power after remap defender TD5??

Decats all well and good but you have to keep the cat for the mot.

Larger intercooler is good but to be fair, soon as you go off road its more **** to clean out.

Scroll through the Td5 section theres plenty of relatively cheap mods that can be done to increase bhp/torque/mpg

You don't need a TD5 cat for the MOT. Mine has passed the last 3 MOT's with no cat and no mention by the tester. Compression ignition engines are not subject to a full emissions test, so the presence or absence of a cat is not checked. On the TD5 at least, it is a particle filter not a full cat.

I thought that a quick test of the MAF ? mass air meter ? I call them (which is the black plastic bit from the air filter to the turbo) was to disconnect it and if the truck ran better then its fecked, certainly without the diagnostic kit or wanting to dick about with voltmeters etc its a quick test.
So if your runs better with it unplugged would that not indicate its a dud, the remap place near me says they have to replace 6 out of 10 TD5 MAF's before mapping as they are nearly always kaput and the owners don't know.
well I have been sitting on the fence for a long time ref a re-map and decided to replace the MAF anyway because mine did run better with it disconnected (default running) It runs even better now with a new one fitted.
Any way whats a "MAP clean" I assume another sensor that if cleaned will improve performance :D
Mine has an EGR removal kit and a K&N filter fitted that's about it so far on the mod front.

Is your Td5 an EU2 model ? If yes, verify that the remap is for EU2 specs engine. Verify also the MAP/IAT/AAP and the MAF sensors. Any faulty sensor that puts a constant value to ECU (for that sensor) is not the way to obtain max performance.

Hi
This is an old thread now , but I think I know the cause of the OP's problem . My Discos TD5 never seemed to have the power I thought it should , with a flat spot until the turbo kicked in . Pulling out from junctions was tricky .
The local Landrover specialist agreed that it was very flat but didn't find anything wrong .
It had a new air mass indicator , which helped a bit . A new air cleaner . A decat pipe . A straight through centre pipe , both helped a bit .
Eventually by reading forums I had another thing to try - the turbo acuator solenoid valve , a £25 part which controls the spool up of the turbo . SUCCESS !!
It pulls so much better now , it's transformed !
Just EGR blank , larger inter cooler and remap to go !

Good on you, but the op didnt have a td5 disco, he had a td5 defender, which isnt fitted with the turbo actuater soleniod

I know its an old one but would this not be the way forward

Standard, fixed geometry turbo design is always a compromise.
Engines need a small turbo for fast spool-up and improved throttle response (reduced turbo-lag) but the small compressor size does not allow enough flow for anything beyond mid-range revs. So a larger turbo is required for mid-range and higher revs and increased flow, but this leads to increased lag at the low end. The VNT or VVT – Variable Vane Turbocharger acts like a small turbo initially then alters geometry to increase flow in higher revs, giving an improved spread of power across the rev range.

did this issue ever get sorted as mine is the same ,i have disconnected the aap which seems to improve it ,a little flat on aceleration but consistant
