Freelander 1 Poor handbrake

Been having a poor handbrake on the freelander so I decided to change all the cables and the shoes.

It's still poor.

Any reccomendations? The drums are rusty but there's not much of a lip on the inside, could it still be worth changing them?

Also does everything look OK with this as the auto adjuster doesn't appear to work. By the way the spring which isn't attached was took off before I took the pic

I had the same trouble I ended up changing all the cables, shoes disc drums springs etc, once you have cleaned up the inside even if you are not changing the shoes etc, refit either new drum or old one and press the break peddle 30 times minimum to set the shoes, then with the hand brake on one click adjust the front cable at the rear of the console.

If you have to adjust at the rear drums also

make sure your auto adjuster is clean and moves easily they often do not work properly though best way is loosen the cables inside the car then adjust them by doing what has been shown then take up any slack by the in car adjuster (under the centre console)

Right ok thanks, ill take off the adjuster and give it a good clean with some brake cleaner and wd40.
How do they want to be adjusted ideally then? Keep tightening the adjuster in the drum untill the shoes are just touching the drum and then slacken off a tad?

I find the trouble with trying to de- adjust the shoes is that the adjuster wheel is a pig to reverse
you have to push the locking spring /tab thingy away to allow the wheel to move two thin screw drivers are best but it will test your resolve

err, they are automatic. As said above by Arctic, clean them up, refit the drum and keep pressing the foot brake (quite hard) and they will self-adjust. You will hear the mechanisms ratcheting as you press and release the pedal. Once they stop clicking, they are adjusted, you can then set the cables.

Sorted cheers guys. New shoes cables and drums and the handbrake is still crap lol. Hopefully once the new bits are bedded in things will improve.

I always adjust them so the stop the drum from turning but will turn with a bit more pressure then back them of about 2 clicks, it can be done
