poor brake effort

D1 300tdi auto my98 with EDC & ABS ( "link" in the below sig) .

Intermittent low effort on braking - vehicle slows , but slowly (!) and has ABS rattle before stopping with very hard pedal press . No apparent fluid loss at calipers nor obvious leak in pipes . Pedal reasonably stiff . Good fluid level in reservoir . etc etc ....

...my initial thoughts are bad seals on master cylinder ....anyone else ?

Same happened to me. some time there's good break but more often very little till you slammed it to the floor. pumping didn't make no difference. When It was breaking soon as you release the pressure slightly it would fall to the floor. Replaced master. all good again now. Vac and booster all good , just come in from checking but good point , thanks Dyte .

John , exactly the same thing as I have then - was the same on my last ES ! Master cylinder off the old japspec then....and , oh joy ! Just started raining !

To add to the fun I realised just now that the ABS light isnt coming up at all . What with all the other drama I hadnt noticed that . Last owner most like took it out , that or it blew from being on all the time . So its find the fault codes and bridge the plug time again !
