2006 Freelander 1 TD4. Put on new drums, all new brake pads etc. New handbrake cables. Tried to adjust handbrake and run out of adjustment, no handbrake at all. Pumped foot brake 30 times before trying to adjust anything. I'm at a loss with this damn vehicle. Any suggestions please.
 
There's an adjuster within the drum set up on the back, you need to set that first before adjusting the handbrake. The way I did it was a little trial and error but did the job. Take the drum off and adjust the ratchet with a screwdriver, keep trying the drum on as you do it. You'll get to a point where you feel the shoes against the drum as you put it on, you want resistance but not to make it impossible to get the drum back on. I don't think the autoadjustment works without some initial pressure. Do this both sides and I'd also slacken off the handbrake adjuster before you do it. Hope this helps!

Thanks for that, I thought that was the reason for pumping the 30 times to adjust the pads closer. I will give that a go tomorrow, thanks again.
 
I hope this isn't sucking eggs and all that - but are you sure everything went back on the way it came off? I took advice from here and took pictures before I stripped everything down so that I could make sure it went back correctly. I didn't replace the cables, but I did replace drums and everything inside them, and it all just went back together and worked perfectly.

This was on the earlier setup on a '99 car and luckily everything was set up correctly before I took the drums off!
 
When refitting the shoes back off the handbrake adjuster nut to the end of its thread. At this point the shoe adjuster should be pre-adjusted so the drums just slide on. Now you need to turn the adjuster manually through the inspection hole on the rear of the drum backplate, once the rubber bung is removed. Click the adjuster over until the drum begins to drag. Then pump the foot brake a dozen times, with the engine running.

Re-check for drum drag and back off the adjuster if excessive. At this point adjust the HB cables to give the correct lever movement.

I took pics with the iPad so I would know it went back correctly.

This is a correctly assembled off side rear shoe assembly.

When replacing shoes I normally use a sanding disc on a grinder to take the lip off the hub, then adjust the shoes until I can just about slide the hub on but it can still turn freely.
Don't assume that because you put them back on the same as they were before that they are on correctly. Many on here caught out that way before. Double check they are correct according to Nodges pic.;)

I put on brand new hubs so no lip. For some reason the auto adjust didn't work, the cog needed winding on a bit. I adjusted the pads till they were just rubbing then adjusted the handbrake cables. I now have a handbrake that is working but I am not 100 % happy with it. I will give it a few days, then do it again. I always take pics with the IPad before stripping anything down.

Many thanks to all who advised on my problem.
 
What's the handbrake travel like? Also when it is off do you have a bit of slack in the cable?
