Unfortunate first post, Mrs rang earlier in a flap, she had started the car, 53 plate TD4 SE, all started fine then the horn came on permanently and she could smell burning. Panicked, turned it off and i was just round the corner so arrived shortly after. No smoke on arrival but visible burning on cable as shown in pic.

Any advice would be really appreciated as i haven't a clue what to expect. Turned it over the once, started ok, lights ok, wipers etc, no warning lights on dash but is now mis-firing!:(

not totally clear in your piccy which bit burnt. but if it's only one or two cables affected for a short length, just cut out the damaged sections and splice in new bits of the correct size. it looks like two cables may have chafed together causing a short.

might be worth checking ALL the fuses for correct type/size, and buy a fire extinguisher !

If i am not confusing the pic with something else then the cable thats the problem looks like the one bottom of pic where the loom is all taped together. This is a loom from the main fusebox so I would try to find out what exactly the wire in question provides a feed to if the wire has no sign of chafing on anything - repairing it could cause the same problem again otherwise!

In the light of day it looks like one of the wires has been rubbing on the metal bracket which the fuse box is mounted on. The loom was packed in tight with no protection and i believe it has worn through then earthed on the metal etc etc. Only affected about 2" of two cables so intending to cut out and splice, then ensure its sufficiently protected. 99.9% sure that this is the cause and not down to an overload/failure anywhere else.

Thanks for the replies and advice

when you've done the repair, get some self amalgamating tape to wrap round the loom rather than insulaton tape. It isn't sticky and won't end up being a sticky mess after 6 months. just stretch the tape a bit then wrap it on itself overlapping 1/2 thickness each turn. I know Maplin sell it.
