Ayup,

This is my first post here, so go easy on me!!

I've got a '96 300tdi Disco, and in April the clutch went on it. I am an agricultural engineer by trade and I mend tractors for a living, aswell as breeding sheep etc. I just didn't have the time to do the Disco and in the end I took it to a friend of ours who has a garage. He put the clutch in it yesterday, and I picked it up last night. Drove without a problem...

I got in it this morning to drive to college, and all I got was a slight grating noise when I released the clutch. It stopped after a while and I decided to carry on and see what happened. I got a few miles, and then it lost drive all together. I abandoned it and left it for the bloke from the garage to pick it up. He did, and phoned up saying that he had sorted it and that it was the fact I hadn't put it in gear on the high/low lever. That's rubbish, because it was driving fine and just stopped. Surely if I hadn't, it wouldn't have driven at all?

Anyway, I drove it home and parked it on the verge. I just got in it to move it... nothing. All I got was a grating and grinding from the gearbox. I tried the high/low lever and it was like stirring porridge. We've removed the lever and we're playing with the linkages but still can't get anything. Nothing's working - low, high, diff lock - there's just nowt there and all I get is grinding and grating.

Please help me as it's the second time it's been unable to move from the roadside in a day

Thanks
James

have you tried using mole grips to put it in hi or low on transfer box housing ,if that lever feels loose remove housing and check selector grub screw

We've just come in from buggering about with it, and we reckon it could well be that roll pin or whatever it is in that housing on the selector.

Does anybody have any pictures or owt of this?

At 10 to midnight though we're reay for some tea, so it'll have to wait til tomorrow now!

gear box or transfer box ? the only roll pins are in gear box top selector housing and securing quadrant to selector shaft
