So my grandad has finally persuaded my grandma to let me take the Discovery 3 off road

. So today I'm taking mine and the disco up into the moors for some greenlaning. The disco is on brand new Pirelli scorpion zeros so at £600 a set my only worry is bursting a tyre. I think I'll go for a scout in the Fender then come back for the disco. I know the disco will get anywhere even on road tyres so I'm not concerned with getting stuck. I'll have to get some pics on later.

we ended up towing a newish disco last weekend on ruttland rigg.. only couple inch of snow.. tarmac road.. fairly steep though.. he laid down 200 yds of skid marks goin uphill spinnin his wheels and finally slid off the road... tied on a disco 1 and pulled him to top of slope...
think it was just down to his poor tyres...

It got cancelled due to the examiner being ill. It's in about a week now. Went up on L plates unfortunately

Your post made it sound like you were out on your own and I thought I musta missed ya post sayin you'd passed.

I wasn't best impressed to get a call 2 days before telling me my test was cancelled.

Greenlanes are under the same laws as metalled roads.

agreed to both comments however the insurance company might not.best check as uninsured is a no no.

just a thought.dont you have to declare off road use?

Fair point re. insurance. Some ins co's specify including greenlaning and others may say insurance void . Technically they should be regarded as public highway but has anyone taken this to court in a trial case?

I would presume that Khaos went in his 90....?

On my 110 when i was learning, it was £15ish for 1 week (NFU, Only insured if for a week as it was not the ideal car to learn in and i wanted to do the L2B

)

Probably a small amount as a named driver on his gran & grandad's policy.

No I can drive any car up to insurance group 16 worth less than £16000 if I name it on my policy. It costs £99 a month to drive my mum's merc (the car I'm learning in) and then the same for each car I add after that. So if I wanted to drive all 3 it would be almost £300 a month but I've only added my 90 and the disco for this weekend.

Have you got any quotes yet for when you're a full license holder? Friends kids have been shocked by how much it goes up.

Not at the moment but I do know a few people 17/18/19 who have fenders and they are cheaper than corsas to insure. The NFU will insure me as long as a parent also joins but they wouldn't give me a figure but it sounds like it will be a good option.

My other option is my dad has a mate in insurance. He has a brand new 5.5 litre range rover, Ferrari california, ferrari 458. His wife has a top spec freelander v6 and his 19 year old son has a brand new polo. He has a family policy that lets him and his wife drive any of the cars and his son only drive the polo. In total that costs £3400. So I'm just getting quotes on that because that's a brilliant price.

Yeah, a van will be cheaper to insure than a car. Once you start making mods, and need modified insurance....it will get higher though. And many of the cheap car insurance guys won't cover any mods etc.

The NFU aren't bothered about mods as long as they aren't on the engine.

Of course my engine isn't modified in any way
