Play in Rear Diff. Input Flange

300tdi 110

Last week when rear propshaft was off I found what I considered to be play in the Rear Diff. Input flange. Easy to turn it side to side with a metallic sounding clunk when it reaches it's limit on either side.
How much level of play should I get here if any?

If the flange is moving and the nut staying still the flange is worn and needs replacing. If the nut is also moving, then what you are describing is backlash in the diff or half shafts. I'm not that familiar with the Salisbury axle but some play is normal. Have a quick search as one of the gurus will have posted up a rough figure.

thats backlash and is normal as long as not to great, any in/out or up/down play is an issue though

I will remove rear prop when the opportunity arises and confirm if play (backlash) is only side to side.

I am still trying to diagnose a rattling I'm experiencing on the overrun. Both props were removed and UJs are fine. I will confirm that the flange is held in place firmly because I don't believe that the Diff input bearing will rattle if worn as failed bearings cause rumbling/grinding but not a rattle.

Mine is a TD5/PUMA 110 axle, not Salisbury. (ROW Spec. 300 tdi). In relation to backlash in the diffs, are there any official documents or guides on how to adjust or even measure this? I always found this to be a little deep. I doubt this is what i need to adjust at this time but i would like a better understanding of it.

Based on what I've found the source of my rattle could very well be my worn rear brake pads. Will replace them and monitor. Will check the half shafts in relation to the drive members as well.
