Just broke down in the l series 5 miles from home engine just cut out no warning lights no noises. Will not start.

I understood the timing belt was not the usual type on freelander but a duplex chain. I am not too sure but was informed that the timing chain is safe.

got it home at 10pm. freezing my balls off as it was really cold last night.

Lots of grief, but not as bad as first thought.

Are you sure its the pump - I think the L Series is stopped by an electrical signal from the ECU to the fuel pump - may be a dodgy connection some where. Could be the belt that drives the pump as well, I had mine changed when I did the main belt.

I'm not sure how 'repairable' the pumps on the L Series are - or if they can be reused after the belt's gone - I think they're calibrated at production and you need to have the engine at TDC and a locator pin inserted into the fuel pump before you remove it.
 
I have a pump sitting in the garage, I would try the relay under the bonnet on the right hand side first. Surely a pump cant just go?
 
even if the timing chain has broken the engine will turn over on the starter.

The pistons will have cleared the way during the few seconds it took for the engine to stop turning following the break

It may not sound quite right when cranking however.

If its the chain then its time to change the engine as the internals will be nicely mashed.
I had this with a 3 litre BMW engine.............

Normally, with a broken cam chain or belt, engine spins alot faster as there is no compression from the pots whose valves are stuck open.

Of course, if you can see the camshaft through the oil filler, you will be able to see it spinning if the chain is ok and stationary if snapped ! :hurt:
 
It's a belt not a chain. Remove the nut on the left hand engine mount and jack with a block of wood under the sump. Lift the gain access to the 4x 8mm bolts on the top cambelt cover. And remove the cover and have a looksee.

I know I didn't need to tell you that, but for anyone else's future reference.
