Guys my wife just got home and the 1.8 freelander is pushing oily water out of the pipe that is attached to the side of the dipstick. It is a pipe that has a curved head and open end what exactly is it and does this mean that the head gasket has gone? The car temp guage apparently has been ok during her drive home.

only pipe i could think of would be breather for ird ,it has heat exchanger with coolant running through it

Upon closer checks this morning it appears that it is the breather pipe for the IRD. Can anyone explain why it will have chucked out the oil and coolant?

Having checked the car this morning it appears that the coolant is being pushed out of the IRD breather pipe. I can see no reason why this is happening. Put it up on ramps and no evidence of any damage to other pipes/unions or the casing itself. Only thing I noticed was there is movement where the propshaft connects to IRD (IRD side).
Have checked engine oil and normal level no evidence of water contamination and no oil that i can see in expansion tank.
Can anyone please suggest what could be causing the pressure to push the coolant and gear oil out of the IRD breather pipe and what can i do to prevent this. Will removal of propshaft help (not sure as the water is coming out at idle) Please am stumped and dont really understand the IRD set up all help greatly accepted thanks John

have you lost any coolant ? tried draining ird to see if its water thats found its way in or coolant ,in any case it needs draining before water pits grears and bearings

yes have lost coolant about 1 1/2 litre. I filled it up with clean water and now it is only clean water that is coming out of the breather pipe. Still have no idea why

still check which ,an ird that filled with water from wading through floods would spill out of breather , but in between ird and gearbox there is an heat exchanger to cool ird it is fed from cooling system it could leak it would involve removing ird to fix

Thanks will do as you say The car definately has been through no floods or puddles and am sure this is the clean water that i have just put in expansion tank.

As James said it's the IRD cooler leaking coolant into the IRD. As a temporary measure you could link the cooler out the system then drain the oil/water out the IRD and refill with fresh quality oil!! The IRD won't need so much cooling in winter anyway. Especially if the car only does short trips.

James/Nodge thank so much for your advice

I drained the IRD and it is indeed full of clean water and then oily gunge. I have disconnected cooling system from IRD and will allow IRD to drain the rest of the day to allow complete drainage.
Will the car be ok for 26 mile round trip daily in the short term and should i remove propshaft to cut down on the load from IRD?

Will decide whether to replace IRDand/or cooler or just get rid.

Can you explain why this has happened is it an internal fault with the cooler?

Again I really appreciate your help you are good guys

13 miles each way is only just got up to temp so will be fine with cooler disconnected just join pipes together so it still has a flow through pipes ,youll need to look at cooler when you get it out ,keep system correct with the right amount of antifreeze ,if it had run on just water or very weak coolant that could be your answer as coolant stops corrosion

This is the first time I've heard of such a problem.

As you suggest it's probably an internal fault in the cooler.

The drive train set up is designed to be suitable for climates from the Arctic Circle to the Sahara Desert so I would reckon that an IRD in the UK would manage fine without being cooled at all over the winter.

As James points out you reported clean water - the coolant is usually pink with OAT antifreeze - or it should be!

Singvogel.
