Compressor for ac is chirping. I’m pretty sure that’s the route anyway. Obviously changed the serp belt and main pulley for that anyway.
I’m going to try and fix the AC. It works on the dash so hopefully wiring is ok but nothing happens when it’s on and I’m 90% sure that’s the chirp.
Part number for replacement AC pump bearing is:

30BG05S2G-2DS

Knob. I don’t think it was the clutch bearing piping up (although it really sounded there). Took the belt off and the bottom idler is clearly on the **** - visible just by spinning by hand. Need to find that part but for now I don’t need AC anyway!
Have done a little rear door build….

Been driving her as a daily when I don’t need to have a child seat. Been bang on. Makes me very excited for the restoration. After going back and forth and actually using the 300tdi, the resto will be staying 300. It’s a lot more cash for not much reason. Cash I can’t warrant. A solid 300tdi can be built cheaply in engine build terms and I actually like the 300tdi engine.

Steering still isn’t quite right. Wheel is out by couple degrees and still feels a bit skittish. Could be the hd springs on rear as it did lots of trailer work before me.

Very nostalgic driving an old 90s car about after getting so used to new stuff.

A new grill came to replace the cracked one and in the same purchase I got a vgc cd changer head unit for the resto. Sad perhaps but I really wanted that in there with the changer!

Not much to report other than this vehicle has been excellent. It’s such motivation to finish my restoration as I really enjoy driving this. Only been driving my pickup when I’ve had to and I nearly put myself through the windscreen braking 😂. My goal is to have a lovely daily out of the restoration. My pick-up is excellent but I’m just finding new stuff totally soulless.

Maybe I’m getting older but I feel like things are just lost with tech increasing. Everything is at the palm of your hand and about pure convenience. Not using your brain. Hate it.

Anyway…. Pig

Well this old sow has been excellent through the winter. I thought I’d sell it when restoration is done but think I’d struggle to part with her. What I’d like to know if what you guys would do to give it a little refresh mechanically?

I’ve tonnes of spares and as it doesn’t smoke much or use oil much oil, I think it’s in fair nick for 240k. I’d like to use it for my 4x4 duties more now I trust it and it doubles up as a van which is really useful.

I can put up with bits that I have to routinely do but am looking at stuff that could leave me stranded off road.
My thoughts:

Fit my silicone coolant houses and a new rad (where/which rad is worth buying? Minefield of junk)

Got a G part water pump I can do at same time in stock.

Cambelt was done apparently by previous owner - I’d believe this as he’s clearly been spannering on it properly and always fixed advisories.

Got a lift pump in stock - Delphi.

What parts are crucial before people do overland trips etc? @marjon, @lynall, @Hicap phill. What would you guys do to keep her good? Any certain checks I may be missing? Don’t breathe hard, doesn’t smoke under load, don’t believe pump has been fiddled with.

For big trips.
Few bits of straight pipe(various sizes(slide in each other to save space)
Straight metal joiners for pipes
electric fuel pump
2xujs(make sure they fit front rear props)
Diesel filter
That’s about it… all other stuff I could live with being damaged but above gets you to most places for repair.
Always fit standard stuff so you can easily get it off the shelf.

Electric fuel pump…. To link to positive and bypass existing incase the lift or injection fails?

Was thinking more longevity than long distance but all good stuff.

Thinks I had in my head were hoses etc. don’t know if power steering hoses and similar are worth replacing.

Always carry s fan belt anyway and that’s a 2 second job. Do need to get one of these smart booster packs too. Was well impressed with the one the transport guy had - enough oomph to jump a 5 litre diesel!

I have a Clarke jump pack. Does 12/24 and starts the 7.5t lorry. Gets 4 boosts from it.
Got little power outlets for usb etc. good if you have a dead motor & camping.
Never had any problems with power steering pipes.
Electric pump, you can transfer fuel from cans or by pass the lift pump.

Got one on offer last night 😎. Went through stock and got enough to do coolant system overhaul. So all g parts going in. Just need to source a decent rad!

Tried being so gentle and one of the long pump bolts still snapped in the housing. Nearly lost my sh1t then remembered I had a spare that’s in much better nick.
Swapping over to the silicone hoses I have, proflow pump, waxstat, Nissen rad.
Hope to get her to that magical 300k without opening her up.
There is a leak still that looks so much like it’s coming from head (wet below cyclone) I’m hoping it’s the rocker gasket. It’s not losing much.
Also got a bit up drivetrain slap on uptake - need to check UJs/doughnut etc. Also need to change t box, diffs and trans fluid soon. Any recommendations on oils?
Trans box also got a little leak but nothing too big.
