Hey all,

picked up the disco 2 - 2001 today.

she survived the 130 mile trip home with no real major issues, a few things on the list...

SRS warning light and no horn.... suspecting the rotary spring thingy under the steering wheel airbag

Rear wiper not working, further investigation required, any suggestions?

Radio works but really poor audio, not had this issue on a disco before, where is the aerial?

the centre console next to my left leg was getting very hot after 80-90 miles, turned the internal heaters off and problem persisted so don’t think it’s the usual rear air blower issue, so some further investigation on transmission, exhaust area, any other suggestions?

needs a very deep clean inside, so borrowing a friends carpet cleaner and steam cleaner over the weekend and will spend a good few hours giving it the once over.

will be popping to Craddocks tomorrow to pick up a service kit, engine oil, transmission oil, EGR delete and decat pipe.

All in all I happy with the purchase so far, it’s 2001 with no sunroofs, 120k miles, same lady owner since 2006.
No MOT which is why I managed to pick her up for £1000 cash

thanks for reading and looking forward to the replies

No MOT? OOh, naughty! Hope plod isn't readin this!
As for SRS light, I'll get a torrent of trouble for saying this but mine comes on quite a lot and it is always the yellow wires and the connector under my seat. Common fault my MOT tester tells me. I cut and reconnected one wire as it was obviously broken but was too lazy to do the other. Now it too comes on and I can fix it temporarily by undoing and reconnecting the connector but i know I'll have to cut and connect it too. So bloody awkward working under the seat.
Of course there is one under passenger front seat too....
No sunroofs! Result!
Sounds like a nice motor unless it requires shedloads of work you haven't seen.
Best of luck!:)

Hi,picked mine up as a project,it has a few issues to work through one of them being the rear wiper motor. I've stripped it apart & it's like new inside. When I apply power to it it moves slightly if you look at the attached picture the shaft that runs through that bush/spacer are seized together (I even drilled that hole in it & spray penertrating fluid in it but it won't budge. The small amount of movement is the bush/spacer moving until the lugs hit the locating holes in the housing. In the end a new motor was needed ! Of course there are other reasons but if you've got power at the wires to the motor when you ask for wipe it probably the motor. Good luck.

I replaced mine... such a faf to do a repair, as it had seized as well. Had to replace all of the rear plastic trim clips as well, as they broke..

Open up the rear door, remove the rear trim panel. Stick the rear wipers on, and check for power at the motor connector. Replacements on the Bay are pretty cheap.....

Buy some trim clips before you start the job, as if it hasnt been off for years, they will just snap off...

Cheers all,

i am off work this week coming so will start getting stuck in.
Planning to remove all the seats and give all the carpets a through cleaning with wet vac and all plastics with steam cleaner.

many pointers for removing the seats?

Rear wiper as Andy Warren and tilly2 have said, if there is power to the motor when the wipers are turned on, then the fault is in the motor. They are fairly cheap and straightforward to replace. Buy trim clips!

The yellow connectors under the seats are often SRS culprits - especially with manual seats as the seat movement is much quicker. But if both the SRS and the horn are faulty the rotary coupler in the steering wheel is also a likely suspect and it is also not too difficult to replace, but you need to remove the airbag. Make sure that before you touch anything to do with the SRS that you disconnect the battery at least 10 minutes before doing so. You must allow any residual current to dissipate, especially if you touch the airbag. Be very careful handling the new coupler as well, they are fairly fragile until installed.

As for taking seats out, for fronts as per Si's remark, watch for wires and disconnect batt long before doing anything to 'em.
Unbolting and removing is easyish, but for the middle row, youll probably find the thread on the bolts that protrudes outside the vehicle will be rusty as heck and therefore make unbolting them a long job, so crawl under, locate, wirebrush, WD40, lots, before doing it, and you'll need a 6 point starjob to do it. A big one. When you put them back in give em a good greasing up or coppaslip. The twin seat in the rear is a heavy bugre and do be careful not to upset its lock-down/lock-up mechanism as I did that with mine. Have yet to fix it so have to take it out for every MOT!

Disconnected the battery and left it a good 30 mins.

checked and disconnected and re connected yellow connectors under both front seats, still same SRS error.

looks like I need to order the rotary clipper thingy!

Are there any other connectors to check?

If you have access to a diagnostic tool it should be able to tell you what the problem is. My Hawkeye correctly identified the rotary coupler.
