Petrol or diesel?

Hi chaps and any chapetts,

Aim looking at getting a series 2 but can't make up my mind between petrol or diesel? A mate of mine said go for diesel as the petrol ones area bit too thirsty but then again if I got a petrol at the right price I would be looking at LPG conversion. Any help and advice would be super

If it's the original diesel they are really chuffin slow! Not that the petrol's rapid or anything, but a bit bitter. Dependant upon budget i'd try and find one with a 200/300tdi engine already in, and as ever, buy the best you can! Whilst landrover parts are relatively cheap and plentiful someone elses part finished project can rack up hundreds in little essential bits you wouldn't even think you'll need! (Says the voice of experience in that matter...)
 
It also depends on your annual mileage , if its low then mpg doesn't really matter.

I prefer petrol, I like the smell!
 
I like diesel :D less acceleration etc but more economy.

if you want petrol many say get a v8, same economy roughly but a lot better performance.

trouble with lpg is the extra tank and where to put it.

I had a chevy suburban converted to lpg and got some tanks installed underneath so didn't lose any inside space, but I was doing the mileage back then so I got payback in less than twelve months.

my latest chevy does less than 1k a year so as jaygti points out mpg is less important, to convert to lpg on such a low mileage would mean I would never get payback.

there was a lot of talk about plpg drying piston rings out a few years ago, the chevy I had certainly got smokier, but then it was doing a high mileage so it could have been normal wear and tear.
 
waste of time IMHO lpg lose of hp, Propane does not proudce the same hp as petrol in the same motor. You have a low hp motor why reduce it more. he cost of the conversion, will take 10's of thousand miles to get any savings.

disagree with you 300k miles and no smoke, 1/2 qt oil consumption between oil changes every 6k miles on my gmc/chevy:)
 
is yours lpg too thor1950?

my old one did get smokier, the new (well newish its a 97) none lpg has very low emissions and no smoke uses more oil than yours though but I have never measured how much it uses
 
Almost two years ago I was torn between petrol and diesel when purchasing my first Series Landy. I probably was swaying towards a petrol for smoothness and smell. However, when purchasing a Series I think the three main priorities should be chassis condition, bulkhead condition and engine / gbox condition. I ended up with a 5mb 2.25 diesel which seems strong, smoke free aside from cold start. Yes, it's slow but it pulls nicely and revs willingly. Many are knackered though at this age and the stories are all on here to be read. If I was to buy again I would equally consider both petrol and diesel again.....and I'm not usually a diesel fan of any car! IMO the differences are small
 
Well I had a look at the mileage I would be doing and calculated it to be around the 3k mark. Did a little thing on an LPG website said I could save £540 odd quid a year that would pay for its self in the first year.
A chum said converting an old Landy could couse problems for it??
As for LPG being problematic I have had two cars on LPG including my current one and never had any probs. well apart from little gas pops in the forester I had before. Very funny when driving through London people think they're getting shot at ( it did sound like shotgun).

mine was a 99 6.0 liter petrol


must have been the lpg that made my old one smoke then, mind you it must be nearly 15 years since I had the conversion done and a good 10 years since I sold the truck.

maybe installations and engine management have got better since then.

one thing I like about diesels is starting them up in really cold weather just as someone you don't like is walking past, gave a couple of people a good fuming this year :D:D:D:D
 
After a fair bit of fettling: RR diffs, overdrive, head, cams from ACR and a DMTL weber I get 20+mpg on the hills and valleys round here and recently got 26mpg on a 50mph motorway run.

I'm glad I did it that way as an LPG kit would have taken up a load of space, cost about the same to fit and I'd probably still want an overdrive. I've heard a lot of crap about mileages but it seems very low teens when you're on LPG so about half what I'm getting so I doubt it would pay for itself.

However, I know a lot swear by LPG....as for a diesel I use mine as a daily driver and want to be able to keep up with traffic on A roads and motorways and can. A regular diesel or 200 without a turbo will always struggle....a 200tdi maybe different.

V8 is a tempter but then you're in to a lot of work, poor economy and higher insurance....sound nice though!

My next project is to fit a v6 engine to one but I've got a fair bit of measuring and fabricating to do first...
