Dry graphite spray lube might work also

May have crud under it...can you not strip it down...may have a rough bit of metal on the spiral.

He does not say if he took the bendix off the motor though in that post....

The Bendix doesn't need to come off really. It is usually sticking on the first few mm of throw and doesn't stick in the engaged position.

It's corrosion causing the problem not crud.
