Performance exhaust worth it?

My 2001 TD4 has a Synergy and EGR bypass fitted. It runs very sweetly.

The exhaust is now tired and needing renewal soon, the mechanic says the outer skin has gone. Two questions come to mind.

Are there any 'performance' exhausts for the TD4, and would they make much difference to power, economy and MOT results?

If it's not worth getting a specialist exhaust, do I really need a LR replacement or are aftermarket exhausts good enough? Who has good prices?

Appreciate any advice, cheers.
 
Would suggest if you wish to go the longevity route, you speak to a company like powerflow or local equivalent. They can usually fab you something up in stainless for around £200-300 and customise it to a degree for you (loud, quiet, bore etc).

exactly what I did, 300 squid, stainless steel system, staright pipe thru to a smaller flatter box, looks and sound nice too. life time garauntee
 
Just remember not to get rid of the cat as it will become part of a visual inspection for the MOT from next year.
 
Its the soot filter they are looking for, to make sure the car is meet to euro 2 standards, but there is no physical check to emissions, only on particulate filters.

SS system is the way to go, makes a nice difference, as long as the min 2.5 inch internal diameter is adhered to, and they use a decent thickness and grade. :)

Hi there Bigwheel,

You've resurrected an old thread here. I agree about the SS box but ......

There is no need for a CAT of any kind, particulate or otherwise on a TD4 presented for an MOT.

This is a common misconception - as the new 2012 regs state that a missing CAT will be a 'reason for refusal' - but the regs are referring to a 'full CAT inspection' which of course applies only to a 'spark ignition' engine.

You're not alone in thinking a CAT is a requirement - but the VOSA has clarified this point at the same time as pointing out that removing a CAT from any vehicle 'may' contravene the Construction & Use regs. But that has always been the case.

It's unenforceable as half the diesels in the country have already been de-catted. Besides who is going to check this - not the MOT testers anyway.

Yeah pretty much. The soot filter is not a requirement and can be removed. The new particulate filters (especially ones fed with the add-blue) are the ones that cant be removed. :)

SS all the way! (Get a quote online with longlife, if you just ignore the quote price email and wait a week or so ((mine was 300 all in)) they tend to email back asking if you still want the job done and usualy knock 20-40 quid off ((mine came down to 250 all in)), always worth a go :) )
 
ah I see what I put in the original post, I meant to say the are NOT looking for the fitment of a soot filter for the MOT. My bad :)
