Performance air filter, do they make that much difference?

Evening all,

I was talking to a fella who bought a posh K&N filter for his 300TDi and he reckoned it made a big difference to the performance of his engine.

Anyone else on here used posh filters or just bog standard?

Mines ready for replacing but wondering if it's worst spending a bit more, thought?

More likely your friend just felt the benefit of having his car serviced.

Even if the 10% claims are true that is around 1bhp increase for your average tdi. Performance filters can be worth having if you plan on keeping the car mainly for the lifetime use but otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Glad you dont work out my wages as 10 percent of tdi power is just over 10bhp not 1bhp, so surely worth having?

But have to say have tried them myself and reckon total waste of time and money, just change the std one often.

I have one of those chavvy conical air filters on at the moment. Doesn't seem to make much difference to anything. It takes up a lot less room in the engine bay though.

I worried about fitting a smaller air filter in line when I coupled up my snorkle, but then realises that (within limits) the ease of the inlet restriction didn't really matter. The waste gate opens when the boost pressure reaches the set point, so a slightly restricted inlet only means the dump valve opens a little later - no consequences for the engine output at high output levels, which is the only time the inlet restriction matters!

New snorkle works a treat by the way, with the advantage of a nice inlet note right by the drivers window

I fitted one to my 110 and it sounds abit nicer alright but the main reason was that it was tearing apart standard air filters inside the airbox
