Hi yes the box did wander before but because of the leak I had it changed-as they could not get a new recon box they sent mine off to be reconed, I think there is a nut on top and garage said as you have that it should not need touching, took it back monday (16th) and told them to sort it!!!

The reason I ask if it did it before is that there is a multitude of things that can cause " wandering ".

The easiest way to see if its the box is to look at the UJ that goes onto the box, ( from the steering wheel ), and slightly move the wheel back and forth.

If this UJ is moving and the wheels/drop arm arent then its trough the box.

If the steering wheel movement is not directly relative to the UJ movement then theres play in the steering column/shaft/UJ,s.

You also have track rod ends, drag link ends and a multitude of bushes, that if worn, could all lead to " vauge " steering.

Del.

Have had one track rod replaced and the wheels relined they were way out been told-have had some bushes changed and they think that the rest is ok!! - cant say about the steering wheel movement not got it back yet, but had been told as it wanders and leaks change it.
Can I get back to you when I get the disco back and let you know how it is then? if it is the same would like another disco driver to look at it and say what they feel also not found a td5 round here to compare.

I,m not sure what you mean there Nick ?.

I gather your saying that the Disco 2 pump and box came before the Cold Climate fluid that they now recommend ?.

Or is it more likely that my local Landrover indie has swallowed Landrovers fluids book ?.

I,m not an expert by a long shot, and will quite happily put my hands up for " blindly adhearing " to what Landrover recommends, ( their more expensive products ! ), but all I know is, Ive just spent 5 odd hours pulling a steering box out, putting one back in, pulling that out, and putting another one in, and I,m in no hurry to get under there again. Now if all that me putting the recommended fluid in does is give me peice of mind, then the extra £ 9.00 is worth it.

The stuff thats in it now is Exteme Climate PAS fluid.
Its a green colour and a lot " thinner " than the red ATF that I put in the other box.

I dont wish to " put the cat amongst the pidgeons " with this thread, however, after all my searches regarding re-con box,s from this supplier I found that, of the folk that had fitted them, half reported good things and half reported bad things. I gave them a try, and it did,nt work out !

What I mean Del is who ever said it would stuff the pump and shorten the seal life is talking rubbish m8.......the spec of the texaco fluid is VERY similar to ATF.......the seals in the system would be produced to a spec, and they will work with hundreds of diff types of oils.

As far as the pump goes, it would pump almost any oil you could throw in there and if the fluid has a lubricating capacity which obviously oil does and it cools the pump (which it would) then it would be fine.

The texaco fluid most likely just has an additive in it to make it work better in colder climates and thats about it, and if you look at the post ref the GTR info (global tech ref) then Dexron III is fine as an alternative in the ACE system, so with that in mind it MUST be ok in the PAS as well.

Most of the U.S guys I talk to have been using ATF for years in both systems with no issues.

At last I found a spec sheet, have looked before but not found much......

Texaco 14315 fluid is the same as or equivalent toTexamatic 7045 which is again equal to Dexron IIE and Dexron III and also GM spec G.M 9985835 and last but not least Saab spec ETX 6024, ETX 6820

So theres plenty of choice, all diff manufacturers use the same stuff, just colour it diff and give it their own name.

Incidently, the Dexron info has ALWAYS been in the NAS spec D2 manuals, so thats probably why lots of the guys overthere never bothered sticking to the expensive Land Rover fluid.

As usuall UP, gets to the bottom of things.

You,d have thought that a place that had only repaired Landrovers for 25 years would have done a little more research into what fluids are acceptable.

Still, if your working on customers cars I suppose using Landrover reccomended fluids takes away any doubt if a problem occurs.

My local motor factors chap had no hesitation in reccomending ATF to Dexron III for my steering system.

Hey Ho.

Cheers.

Del.
