I know, I know - this has probably been done to death... so sorry... but my searches only come up with some old stuff and I wanted to pick your brains...

So I have just bought a really good nick P38 4.6 but it is a Japanese import so the radio head unit only goes up to 90hz (radio 2 at most) - plus there is no cd cassette in the boot (easily remedied if I want to via e-bay). I understand that there is a unit that I can plug into the back to allow me to access all the FM frequencies in the UK but it seems much more sensible to put a new head unit on, get DAB and all that jazz...

From reading the other threads, it seems that there are separate amps in the doors to run the speakers (I confess to not being bothered about the sub-woofer in the boot - that just seems to give a loud 'pop' every so often and scare the bejeezus out of me) but it also seems that new/modern head units have the oomph to deal with that so I shouldn't need a separate amp etc...

So my questions are:
1. Will any reasonable head unit be suitable to slot in?
2. Is DAB an easy retro-fit?
3. Any particular recommendations from people who have done this? (I don't want a big-screen/sat-nav just radio and either CD or aux-in - both likely in modern units I think)

Thanks for your help and apologies again...

Tbh I would just simply rip it all out and start again with a new modern hu wired directly to either the old door speakers or nice new ones thus by-passing the old system as your clearly not worried about retaining the standard look. Its on my to do list when my rear mounted DSP amp finally dies.

Have a look here http://www.stockholmviews.com/p38/index.html#audio

Hmm...thanks Dave. Yes, you're right, I'm not that bothered about the look (although I don't want a flash unit with disco lights etc..., apply the KISS principle - works for me) however, although it is tempting to go the whole hog, I'm not sure I want to spend a huge amount of money on a whole new sound system - I was rather hoping just to put a good head unit with DAB aerial for a couple of hundred quid (at most...). But...a fool and his money are easily parted (I think I wrote the script for that...) and I know that if I venture into a good ICE shop I will be very tempted...

You can bypass the doors amps and just connect a modern hu which uses internal amp to drive the speakers just run new speaker cable to each door, simple and reasonably cheap to do.
