Just a small detail, you say you are having top hat liners and new rings, wouldn't this be a false economy, should have new pistons too, I would get more info if this has been recommended by the garage doing the work. And did you say that the engine was hydraulicly locked because of water in the bores, this could have damaged the con rods and small ends. Water wont compress so the pressure has to go somewhere.

Only made the engine turn slower on one occasion (the morning I took it in) All checked alright.

The motors only done 60k, (when these engines will do 200k +) so new pistons are overkill really, you have to draw the line somewhere when you consider the value and age of the car.

UPDATE

Been to the garage today, the engines back in, start up tomorrow....hopefully.

Just realised the MOT has run out while its been off the road

Just looking forward to getting it back now

Good news on the pick up. Keep an eye on all levels every journey for a week as its easy not to tighten up a few clips when rebuiloding an engine. Be interested in how you think it compares to the previous engine before it went tits up

Oh yes, will have a good selection of tools and top ups in a box in the boot !
Im hoping it will be a bit better as a couple of the cam lobes were quite rounded rather than spikey. Although the "old" one was a joy to drive.
Im also hoping to drive it to St Albans on Sunday so that should be a good test.
But will get a few miles on it before then.

Im not "non mechanical" but am trying to write so that everyone understands !! ;)

Have now collected it, straight thro the MOT with only 109 ppm on emissions.
The difference is incredible ! Super Super Smooth now (it was good before) but now I imagine it feels like Jennifer Anniston and an unlimited supply of baby oil
All in all a well spent £2.7k  :)

2.7k in one whack, ouch!

I hope it goes well for you !!

If I had the time, space, equipment and inclination to do all the work myself I could have saved a grand :)

So all in all £1700 to recon a 4.6 with top hat liners and asscociated bits, not too bad when you look at it that way I suppose :D

Over and out (for now)

Yep when you think about it its not bad at all. Its uped its value. Scrap its worth £1500.
Low miles with a new engine its got to be worth £4500-£5000. You also have the great feeling its all been taken care of and if it goes tits up at least you can take it back to the mechanic , we monkey DIY ers have the lovely task of stripping it down AGAIN !!!

I don't care how much they cost, I love the sound of a V8 through Janspeed pipes. 20K on a 7 seater or 2K on a Rangie with a few probs, I know what I'd do.
