I have a 1997/R 4.6 Autobiography P38. N/S/R wheel area started to make a nasty noise when moving. A local mobile mechanic has stripped it down and identified the issue as a wheel bearing, not axle or driveshaft, which sounds the lesser evil. He has advised that you can't replace just the bearing part and have to replace the whole hub assembly, which costs £500+ labour. Can anyone confirm if this sounds accurate, or can the actual bearing part just be replaced? I had a quick poke about for an OEM part and found the hub assembly for £306 + p&p from Rimmer Bros. Any input from a P38 enthusiast would be most welcome. I also need to fix a couple more minor things before MOT which is due shortly. I'm not sure if I'll keep it after that as it rarely covers more than 3000 miles pa.

there are wheel bearing kits available and they can indeed be changed. Basically you get what you pay for ; Britpart are cheap with relative life expectancy, Timken are great but reflected in price. There could be some reason your mechanic has stated it can’t be done due to wear or damage after actually working on your vehicle. Could be they don’t want the extra work involved, you’d have to speak to them about why. Many garages are just unwilling to work on P38s period.

In future please direct questions to the RR section. This section is reserved for introductions and pics. Quick look in the searchbar of RR section will provide most answers.
